Minister of Forests Disappointed Canfor Won't Rebuild NCP

Prince George, B.C.- Minister of Forest and Range, Pat Bell, says he is disappointed to hear Canfor has decided not to rebuild the North Central Plywood plant in Prince George .  “The decision is based on economics” says Bell “I understand though that there is an insurance payout, so we will be looking to see that the money is reinvested in other Canfor facilities in the area to ensure the long term sustainability of those operations.”
Bell says the forest tenure tied to the NCP facility does not have a lot of volume and the mill was facing challenges finding good quality peeler logs because of the amount of checking on mountain pine beetle logs.
Canfor also released  it’s second quarter financial results showing it had a net profit of $65 million “That is encouraging, and is much better than where the industry was a year ago” says the Minister of Forests who points out the improved bottom line didn’t help revive NCP “But let’s not paint a pretty picture here, because it isn’t.  I am not happy with the result ( the decision not to rebuild) but we will work towards making sure the other operations are in top running condition so they can remain competitive.”

I've lost any respect I had for Canfor. The one mill that was staying afloat and they stabbed us in the back.
Bell says “I understand though that there is an insurance payout, so we will be looking to see that the money is reinvested in other Canfor facilities in the area to ensure the long term sustainability of those operations.”

Who's he kidding! Bell can't do squat about how that money is spent. What a joke. That money will go back into the company to be spent as Canfor Exec's please.
Time to pull Canfor's forest licences.
The Lib's feel there should be no tying of cutting licences to the production facilities. Basically they are writing off many communities throughout BC. While I suspect the PG was a ommunity they thought would be ok, they did not count on a major fire. The Lib's ideologically driven adgenda is as bad as the NDP's was......just different. Such a shame that we can't have a government in BC that cares about the province more than their own ideology!!
Clearly everyday Canfor must be cutting its own tree down because fewer and fewer roots are in the community. CANFOR SUCKS THE BIG ONE. As for Pat Bell, maybe he should go back to his Hamburger Business because he isnt a good politician, but who is. Time for a New City Council, Mayor, Premier, Minister of Forest etc. Someone who isnt affraid to stand up to big forest companies like CANFOR.
A big hello to B.C.and Opinion 250!
I am down here in Wyoming and I am really disappointed to hear this.
My low opinion of Canfor just went down even more, but I guess I am not all that suprised.
As far as Pat Bell rattling off,he kisses corporate butt just like the rest of the Liberal government in B.C.!
When he is not kissing Gordo's ass, that is!
Like he didn't see this coming?
The Liberals were the ones who screwed up the timber to the mills tie-in so a big thank you to them!
Bastards!
My condolences to all concerned!
(I am in Sheridan right now, and it is 95 degrees!...but the beer is VERY good!)
If the plywood plant is such a good business and such a money maker, then why would they not rebuild, or why wouldnt some other investors get a TFL and build a new plant.

The short answer is because there is little or no money in this venture.

You dont build $50Million plywood plants to employ people, you do it to make money. There is no other reason for Corporations to exist.

Get used to the idea as there is more to come.

Well said skabowl!
And Palopu...your right.
There IS much more to come, and none of it will be pretty!

Palopu's words are very blunt but true.
This is way to funny, the staunchest socialist wouldn't make such an assine comment as this,

says Bell “I understand though that there is an insurance payout, so we will be looking to see that the money is reinvested in other Canfor facilities"

Really now , whats next from the Liberal waste of sperm party, which brand of paper one should use to wipe their ass with, or maybe where you have to invest your welfare dole.
Now now, folks. There maybe a chance Mr. Major will be able to build a casino on this property. let's hope. Lotsa parking and no riff raff out there in the BC Rail site to bother anyone. How about a Performing Arts Centre too? Maybe with a mime troupe entertaining us through mime as to how our economy slowly went down the toilet in this town? You heard it here first.
Poor Bell just doesn't understand anything. Must have had his bell rung by Campbell too many times.
From the Canfor Website

At Canfor "Our Roots are in the community" is not just a corporate slogan but also a reflection of our committment to the people and the communities in which we operate.

I say bullsh*t. The only committment is to the bottom line. But like we didn't all know that anyway. They brung us to the dance but now they don't want to dance with us.
Does it mean less polution for Prince George city region? The BC government needs to invest the same amount in a cleaner industry in Prince George
region to create the same no
of jobs.
We COULD endure 4 more years of the Liberals, given the lack of better choices, but not with Campbell at the helm.
He has to go,and I am suprised his party hasn't figured that out yet!
Gordon Campbell IS the problem.
He is arrogant and self-serving and running a one man government.
Considering he isn't all that bright in the first place,he will only keep screwing up this province and kissing corporate butt!
He will also continue to demolish our resources for the sake of the almighty dollar and his corporate buddies and we are ALL going to pay for that!
We already are.
His carbon tax was the begining of what is coming under this government.
North Central Plywood had been a consistent performer since it's inception in the early 70's. Reading between the lines it seems like Canfor wants to divert the fiber from the NCP TFL to their other operations. Now they get a windfall
(from Canfor's website) "Gain of $36.3 million ($0.25 per share) resulting from a fire that destroyed the Company’s North Central Plywoods (NCP) mill in Prince George in May. The gain mostly reflects estimated net insurance proceeds in excess of book value." (I read this as $36.3 million over what it was worth on the open market (there was an offer to buy NCP put forward to Canfor last year)
declare it as a profit and divert it out of this community.
There are issues when so few players are involved in the industry and this is one of them. I believe that plywood was not part of the Canfor vision and with the majority of management fighting over the fibre supply that NCP never stood a chance.

Makes me even more worried about whne the other shoe is going to drop and we get told the ALR lands to the west of the airport will remain frozen for farming.

Hell the farmers can't afford to buy the land, and if they did buy the land they can't burn the land clearing debris like they used to. Now the timber and debris has to be hauled away and buried.

The other shoe is coming down soon.
I'm not sure why some people think Canfor should be different than any other company. They do what's best for themselves. They don't owe anybody a job for life, like some people seem to believe in their dream worlds.

If there was any way they could have made it viable they would have re-built.

Why should the taxpayers pay for you Jobs Plan?

What the hell is Pat Bell talking about? The insurance cheque will go to Canfor and they will spend it how they wish...more than likely not a dime will be reinvested in PG. How does he think he has a single word to say about where the money goes? Idiot.
Boy Canfor is one class act. Now that they are not rebuilding NCP they have sent letters stating that they no longer have to give the employees the 6 months of benefits they promised and they are cancelling them all at the end of Sept instead of Nov. 85 million dollars in insurance money and they cant even honor what they promised in june
