Prince George, B.C.- Watch for a change in the left turn lights at 15th and Ospika Avenue in Prince George. That intersection is one of the worst in the City when it comes to collisions.
The change will restrict northbound and southbound left turns on Ospika to “protected-only” phasing. Currently, northbound and southbound traffic on Ospika turns left with a protected green arrow, then may continue to turn left after the green arrow as gaps permit.
Under the new signal phasing, Ospika left-turning traffic may turn left only with the green arrow, and must stop when the arrow turns to red. The new phasing will be similar to that on Highway 97 at 5th and 15th Avenues.
The change in left turn phasing is expected to reduce the number of left turn conflicts, and thereby improve the safety of the intersection. However, without the left turns after the green arrow, drivers on Ospika may encounter additional delay when turning left.
The project is being co-funded between the City of Prince George and the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, under the Road Improvement Program.
The signal upgrade will cost approximately $23,000.
