It was actually August 2nd 1858 that the mainland was declared a Crown Colony to be known as British Columbia, but the first Monday in August has become the day for celebration. Premier Gordon Campbell says this year, B.C. is marking a milestone "150 years of achievement, cultural diversity and community strength since the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia in 1858. The people and events that have shaped British Columbia are unlike any other, and have contributed so much to our nation and our world. I proudly join all British Columbians in pausing to take stock of the challenges and triumphs of our history, and in looking forward to our future. The Premier says this is a time to reflect on the strengths of B.C. "The blending of traditions and cultures in an exceptional and evolving multi-cultural mosaic, including our First Nations’ heritages,has helped create this unique society. We are all fortunate to live in British Columbia, a place of natural riches and beauty, of prosperity and of opportunity." You can celebrate B.C. Day with some events in the Prince George Region. Whatever your plans are for the day, drive carefully. The RCMP have already made it very clear they are on the road in increased numbers looking for speeders and aggressive drivers.Prince George, B.C.- It is B.C.
