Prince George, B.C. - The ‘Food for Fare’s promotion that occurred during the PGX this past weekend was not as successful as organizers had hoped.

The weekend total was approximately 400 pounds of food.

The City of Prince George, the PGX, Prince George Transit, and St Vincent de Paul partnered to promote a different type of food drive by offering free bus fares for those who brought a non perishable food item.

Aidan Kelly, Transit Analyst with the City says he is hopeful the program will be better next year, “It was not as much as we would have liked, but as it was the first year I think this is a great building block for the future. We need to do a bit more advertising in and out of the transit system. As ridership is quite high, next year it would be more beneficial to promote the week is coming up within the transit system.”

Although many people have monthly passes, Kelly says many generous people contributed to the cause anyway by bringing non-perishable food items to add to the box.

A monthly pass is tax deductible, pal. A can of beans ain't. Times are tough fer those who have to take the bus. Do the math. Keep yer receipt from yer can of beans and see if Revenue Canada will issue a tax credit to you fer that.
