Prince George, B.C.- The public hearing on the new Pawnbrokers and Second hand dealers bylaw will be held on August 25th.
Council rescinded the first two readings that had been given previously because the public notification for the public hearing had not been given within the allowed time frame. Council then passed the first two readings again to set the wheels in motion for the public hearing.
The new bylaw calls for second hand dealers and pawn shop operators to take detailed information on the person providing the item. The information  (complete with photo i.d.)  will have to be electronically filed with the RCMP and kept by the business for 30 days.
The idea behind the bylaw is to reduce the possibility of stolen goods being sold through pawn shops or second hand stores.

This might mean fewer pawn shops in the future ...?
Liscence the second hand and pawn shops, to one for every 20,000 people. Thus the maximum # is four currently. Thus if one wants to get into it they have to wait until one goes broke, looses the liscence or can be bought out.

Thus if they are caught selling or buying hot goods, they may loose the liscence to operate.

Just like a liquor liscence.
Well...holey-- moley, theres a good idea!
Hats off to the people who put this obvious concept to actual constructive use.

Hopefully all outlets such as these are forced to do this, in every town.

With the price of gas these days, we wouldn't want these crooks to have to hold up gas stations so that they could drive to another town with our stolen stuff in a stolen truck.

Now...if we could just get the scumbags that buy stolen property rounded up and sent to jail, I think the rampant thieven just might slow up a tad.

No market for stolen property, and maybe less cashflow for the drugs they usually end up buying.
This is one economy which needs to be destroyed.
Who needs Sears and a rental centre when you can just visit a pawnshop and buy what you need due to some other slobs misfortune of being a victim?
Hey, why not make the Chances bingo hall into a mini mall for pawnshops and secondhand stores. We could have them all in one place with a covered, heated parking lot to store the contrband in. Stolen property could be delivered and unloaded out of sight in a heated environment. It could have a good flow through - in through the basement, out through the front doors to the nearest drug house. Maybe the townhouses that Major promised for the site could be built and used as crack houses. Kinda keep all the crime in one place. Free enterprise at it's best.
