Prince George, B.C. - A man who suffered burns in the blaze that destroyed the Columbus Hotel on Third Avenue in Prince George this morning, is being transported to Vancouver General Hospital.

The man is said to be in critical condition.

He was one of three people take to Prince George Regional Hospital this morning when the hotel burst into flames. The other two were treated for smoke inhalation and released.

Officials have accounted for all but one of the residents and staff of the hotel. The missing person is “J.J” said to be in his seventies.

Deputy Fire Chief John Lane says the building is far too hot to allow firefighters inside, he says if there is anyone in that structure, it will be a recovery, not a rescue.

The first crews arrived within 4 minutes, and found heavy smoke coming from vents in the exterior of the three storey brick building, with several people trapped at the windows on the second and third floor.

Six people were rescued using ladders.

Crews then attempted to enter the building to perform search and rescue, and encountered tremendous heat, smoke and fire conditions within a few feet of the front door. An exterior attack was commenced.

Currently, most of the roof has collapsed, and the ladder truck is flowing large volumes of water into the centre of the building where the majority of fire remains.

Crews have contained the fire damage to the Columbus, with no fire spread to the two immediately adjacent structures, H&R Block and the Generator night club.

Approximately 30 Firefighters are on the scene. The night shift has remained on duty, and other off-duty personnel have been called in to ensure coverage for the city.

A complete search of the scene will be performed when the fire is extinguished and the scene is safe to enter.
There are no damage estimates at this time. Investigation into the cause will commence once the fire is out and the remaining structure is safe for entry.

Third Avenue between Dominion Avenue and Quebec Avenue will be closed for until further notice.

so sorry to hear about the burnt victom I wish him a recovery....I also wish for JJ to be found safe.
What happened to the video?
Sigh! So sorry to all involved in this.
:{ I hope the owners get what they need to rebuild so that all those who will be out of work have something to look forward to. God bless you all!
The video is under the "columbus destroyed post" Sea
no one cared about jj when he was pan handling downtown and you guys turned him down.
Tank - that is a huge assumption that no one cared about J.J. he had a lot of friends, me being one of them. I have known J.J. for 20 years.

AND J.J. wasn't a panhandler, he never approached anyone for money, he used to do odd jobs for different business around down there as well he worked for the Weiner King as well.

ok im sorry for the comment anastasia i just thought he would pan handle ( i would if i was a bum)and i notice no one ever gives them spare change but me
Tank, I didn't know JJ but now you are calling him a panhandling BUM.
well then Tank that is the difference between you and J.J., he was not a bum, but a great guy!! always a quick smile and something nice to say, and then there was his sense of humor! dry but funny!!

I sure hope they find him, and he is ok, as he will be greatly missed by many.
Open season on everone today tank?

I don't know JJ personally just his face downtown and he is not a bum. He is just an old guy who's home downtown burned. I have a business downtown and would welcome more guys like JJ.
I did know JJ and he wasn't a bum,he was a very kind and quiet man, with an awesome sense of humor who was an icon to "The Bus",like diesel said he's an old guy who lost his home and from the way things look possibly his life too, before people start to judge others, try taking a walk in thier shoes.
I think I know who JJ is, but haven't seen him for almost 10-years. If its who I think it was then he was a decent guy that'll be missed by a lot of people. He used to help me with the empties sometimes when I delivered beer and he was alright in my books.
yet another assumption by Tank that someone residing at the Columbus is a bum.

Do people realize there is very few (if any) rental units available that someone making minimum wage can afford? Let alone a senior bringing in a measly pension income?
