Sorry to hear who it was. My condolences to the Enders family.

Ride free my friend.

V.

I am sorry to hear this. So very sorry. For Val, and also for the "young" driver.

RIP VAL. I met her a few times and she was a inspiration to everyone. You will be greatly missed.
Condolences to the Enders family.
I hope the 19 year old kid decides to give up on driving for a few years. Maybe he cares enough to understand what he has done.

metalman metalman,
When you fall off the horse you need to get back on right away or you will always fail to ride. When you trip over your own feet, do you stop walking?
This 19 yo young man needs to get post trauma counseling and be encouraged to take a safe driving course. He had an accident due to undue care and attention and needs to be trained better.
Loki Driving is a priviledge, not a right.
This kid blew a stop sign, not failed to park correctly. He had a license, he knew it was against the law not to stop at a stop sign, but the punk ran right through it onto a major highway. He should be charged with manslaughter and not be able to drive for a number of years. If he can't get back on the horse, I personally don't care. A very nice lady was killed because of this kid, driving lessons, better training, wouldn't have made a diifference, I don't think because he made a choice and unfortunately it was the wrong choice. No one's fault but his own.
Loki, I sincerely hope you are joking, even if it would be in bad taste.
The boy who is guilty of careless driving will not change his ways by virtue of being handled with kid gloves, or with more practice stopping at a fri***in stop sign. I agree with Junco, charges are in order, a lesson must be taught, and the lesson should NOT be that he is not to blame for taking someone's life. As I posted before, there are a lot of careless drivers out there, and they take out motorcyclists all the time. Brains and common sense are required, not more training.

You says the driver of the Caravan was a guy?

So many just don't care, rules or laws are not for them and more training will do nothing, keep them of the roads would help.
When a traffic infraction causes death I think the driver should never be allowed behind the wheel again.
Being taught to pay attention while in control of any motorized vehicle needs to be a very large part of the licencing process.

The fact that there is not much emphasis on paying attention while driving during the the process of getting a licence needs to change.

Paying attention to the actual act of driving a motorvehicle while driving seems to have taken a back seat to cellphones, makeup, chatting with passengers, food, reading etc.

It is each and everyones personal responsibility to pay attention to the act of driving and nothing else while in the control of any motorized vehicle.

It is also the personal responsibility of everyone to know where stop signs and all other traffic control signs/devices are anywhere they are driving.

Paying attention is the key.
YamaDoo - Male or female, matters not. Age old practise of useing he/him to cover all.

Male or Female, the driver made a horrible and selfish mistake. Why? Driving like his/her parents? 19 years old, you'd think all the lessons would be "fresh" in their minds. Why don't people stop at stop signs or red lights? I see ALL THE TIME huge semi tractor/trailers running lights right on the main by-pass, because they are going to god dam fast to stop. Many times I have been sitting at a light, it turns green - but holy smokes, 20,000 tons of pure death goes flying by right in front of me. All I can think is "geeze, Im glad I didn't assume it was safe to proceed just cause the light was green". And just think, these drivers undergo EXTRA training to learn to operate these rigs. Go figure!!

We can snivel and complain till the cows come home, but until we retrain all the morons who can't seem to remember how to come to a COMPLETE stop, how to NOT tailgate, how to NOT cut people off when changing lanes, how to YIELD to another vehicle politely and properly, how NOT to speed in a residential area (I know, It should read not to speed anywhere, but let's face it, we need to start somewhere so let's start where the children usually hang out), and further - that the upraised middle finger in a forward motion is NOT an acceptable substitue for a hand signal.... etc etc.
we are born with brains and choose whether to use them or not.
Common sense is not an inherent trait, it comes from learning a lesson and evaluating a better coarse of action.
I never did say that he should not be charged, but rather that drop the hammer on an unfortunate event, we should endeavor to improve things not just seek retribution. The justice system I believe is to rehabilitate not get revenge.
It is so sad that this and many other motorcyclists and pedal cyclists are hurt or killed daily by oblivious driver, but a young person needs to learn the right (safe) way and so I still say that training and counseling needs to be part of the solution. Yes, there should be a legal action, but not just retribution.
