Prince George, B.C. –  In what is beleived to be a  first in Canada,  the B. C. Construction Association is going to adopt random testing for drugs.
Russ Polsom, Blackwater Construction and 1st Vice Chair for the Prince George Construction Association says the tests are the way of the future, “None of us want to be in the field with people under the influence of prescription drugs, non prescription drugs or alcohol. This is just an unnecessary risk on our job sites.”

Polsom says this has not come from any particular incident but more of a change in safety culture, "We are now moving up in safety consciousness.”

There is a great deal of work yet to be done as  the Association hasn't made it clear how the testing will be done. There is no a definitive date for the policy  to come into  effect, nor  is it clear just which substances will be targeted.  It is anticipated the testing will look for alcohol and marijuana.

Excuse me? What on earth do they plan to do with someone who's "...under the influence of prescription drugs..."?

Otherwise, it's a damn fine idea.
I for one would like to see drug and alcohol testing in every mill, job site, store, etc. I'm getting tired of working with the dopers and boozers, putting up with their mood swings when the crap wears off......

and don't tell me you've never seen it before..... its all around us.......
God invented beer so construction workers wouldn't rule the world!!
It will be for the best. But what are we going to do with a positive result? Who makes the judgement call? "well this guy/girl has only a little pot in the bloodstream, let it go" Or will it be "this person has consumed alcohol within the last four days, not allowed to work" Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? I too am all in favour of catching jerks who are impaired at work, any kind of work, not just construction, how about your surgeon? Don't you want to know if he has a problem with nose candy? Your lawyer; smoking crack? Enquiring mind needs to know.
metalman.
you're right of course.... I agree.... Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? loosely translated...."Who shall watch the watchers themselves?"

sometimes I think the world runs on drugs.... what about me when I'm wired on coffee..... LMAO

so what happens to those injuried workers that WCB has forced to go back to work [eating and a roof over your heads] who are under prescription drugs ei pain killers, antidepression pills. They don't pass the drug test WCB has said they are OK who is going to pay their bills????
The company my husband works for already does this, everyone must pass a drug screen to be hired, and they will do people at random if there is suspected drug/alcohol use. They have a zero tolerance policy for being "under the influence", and he has seen many workers lose their jobs already. Their company has one of the highest safety ratings in the field. I'm all for it, I am so happy this is going to be a standard in the construction field, lets get 'em!!!
I have a buddy who works on large construction projects all over the world, but mostly in Canada and in B.C.
One of his biggest concerns is the cloud of dope smoke that seems to appear on a regular basis on many of the job sights he is on.
It's nothing new,but it does need to be stopped!
Dope of all kinds may have slowly become almost a part of our culture unfortunately, but there is certianly no place for it on the job site or behind the wheel of a car or equipment.
A good policy!
IT'S ABOUT TIME WOO HOO . (DrugTesting) .If you have to take antidepression pills you must be married lol .
Lets get em sounds great, but I figure it will be a tool that is abused to target individuals for reasons that have nothing to do with safety. Its a witch hunting weapon IMO. I think if guys are impaired that speaks for itself and there are a number of ways to get rid of them already and everyone already knows who they are anyways. The thing that gets me sometimes on this issue is that pot is an inhaled drug that can come from environmental contamination (ie neighboring apartment) and not just first hand use so wouldn't this be a charter of rights issue if contamination is not voluntary, because otherwise a lot of people will lose their jobs from external forces beyond their control.

I wonder if the union members had a vote on this, because I haven't heard of any of them voting to subject themselves to this kind of invasive threat to their future employment.

It will be a witch hunt that will be abused by the pious and it will destroy lives as a result.
The further erosion of liberty in all western countries and the further flexing of fascism creeping it's way into our lives. Fools allow this kind of intrusion into our lives. Real lovers of freedom and liberty will tell these people to take a hike.... but being sheeple people that this population is I'm sure there will be little to no resistance to this fascism. You'll be very sorry one day that you allowed this to take root.

As for me? I love freedom and will NEVER submit. Cowards allow this taking of your freedom.
Smoke some more dope kevin...
I don't have any problem with testing for impairment from alcohol or drugs. Many places already test, including the Fort McMurray sites.
The problem I have is that the THC test doesn't test impairment, only if one has ingested it within the past few weeks, or been exposed to it. Imagine the outcry if the alcohol breathalizer indicated use of alcohol sometime during the past month, and people were charged accordingly.
So kevin1006,are you saying that smoking dope on the job is ok?...are you saying that if you can't smoke dope on the job because of drug testing, you would take a walk?
And you do have a valid point my2bits, and it is something that also needs to be looked at in order for the testing to be fair.
I think that testing done properly will cause less workplace injuries but the reasons the person is on drugs should be looked at and if not acceptable dealt with in an appropeate matter. Unions should not object as long as the matter is dealt with fairly. It means less of their members getting injuried and having to deal with WCB who as a friend of mine put it are trained to screw the injuried worker.
