Prince George, B.C.- “Wanted… a few good candidates!” That is the lead line on a flyer that is making the rounds in Prince George.
The idea is to spark involvement in the upcoming November municipal election and to make sure people take a shot at local politics.
The person behind the campaign is Dan McLarren. The local businessman says he’s looking to form a special committee that will be willing to offer financial and volunteer support to candidates who have solid ideas about a number of topics including:
Safe streets,
Downtown revitalization,
Lowest taxes possible, and are pro development.
Membership on this committee comes with a price, anyone wanting to be part of the committee has to pay at least a thousand dollars.  “We already have about a dozen or so people who have signed on and we have about $30 grand, so that would go a long way to helping someone’s campaign” says McLarren.
No, Dan McLarren is not running, but he says there are some opportunities this year for some talented folks “The Mayor’s chair is open, and I suspect there will be some open seats on Council, so now is the time for those with good ideas to step forward. What we are saying is, if you have ideas, we can help.”
Incumbents are not being excluded from this offer of support.

I think you can count on Owl running. He ran last time, but people weren't willing to be "educated". Since the last election he has being trying to raise his profile by being on various civil committees and the arts scene. It would be beneath his dignity to be a squeege kid on Victoria Street to get known, so I'm not sure much will change this election.
Owl is intellegent, but it takes more than just announcing your presence to get votes because not many voters trust smart people. The electorite like harmless sincere types that don't have any answers, but have lots of heart and feelings. That's why media types and movie stars get elected.
Owl certainly does give a hoot about this community, that's for sure.I do agree with Yama though..owl doesn't seem the type to run aound shaking hands and kissing babies. It's a shame that, that is how one gets elected. PG needs some strong no nonsense folks elected.
I think McLarren wants to own a couple of councillors or mayor.
Unless McLarren creates an official "elector organization" and has a common name (like a party) attached to his slate of candidates, it won't help at election time. With lots of choice, the incumbents always have a huge advantage. The only hope for a slate is for them to be memorable in the voting booth by having an elector organization name attached.

Furthermore, with more dissatisfaction in council, more people tend to run. When more run, the "anti-incumbent" vote gets split up so much the newcomers don't have a chance.

Best example yet is the opportunity we had last election to have two fresh faces as Rogers and Dezel were out of the council race - and we only got ONE new face! People opted for the old name they recognized rather than evaluate people on skills and ideas.
I think McLarren wants to own a couple of councillors or mayor.

With the money he is getting this sounds about right. Lowest possible taxes and pro development. Why waste his money thats what we have now.

And all you people that are cheering for Owl. Did you ever notice what his stand is on property tax. Dont let the smooth talk fool you.
Cheers
I agree about Owl. He talks smooth, but has a very bad elitist steak on a number of issues from the disadvantaged people in the community, to his pet the new Performing Arts Center. But at least he listens to reason and that says a lot more then what we have now.

I think this group is on the right track if we are going to get people out there that would not otherwise have the seed money needed to make it happen. It makes me think about it more, but who knows....
The idea that candidates can get a large community sponsor is great. They will not be owned by Dan, come on. I as a candidate would much rather be backed by a consortium of like mined individuals than one or two single minded big businesses. From my experience less mistakes get made as a well operating team, I believe that is what they are trying to achieve.
Tell me Diesel who owns the present mayor, Zuroski and Bannerman? I would say they are all like minded. But who do they listen too and what drummer do they dance too? They certainly are not like minded like the people we read on this website.

Dan is trying to ensure that the people elected will represnt his intersts in the business communtiy as the majority on the present council are doing. Its all about economy, economy and economy.

cheers
I hear you bridge and you are correct the majority of current council does not represent you, I or my friends who also own and operate there own small to medium business.

I actually don't believe this current council has done very much for business as a whole. They always miss the thing that can bennefit all business and citizens alike. Quality of life issues. If our community was more people focussed it would be so much easier to atract and maintain great employees who want to stay and invest there life here.

I don't know Dan but I am going to guess he is completely dissatisfied with current councils dirrection. The idea of a slate can cause a major displacement of current council. I agree we need that. Pro development can be a very possitive thing to if done correctly. Keeping the tax's low indicates to me they likely value smart growth principles. Honestly I don't know enough about this group to be critical of them.
