Prince George, B.C.- With news a link has been established between cases of listeriosis and its plant in Toronto, Maple Leaf Foods has voluntarily recalled all of the products made at that plant. It is, says the company’s president, the safest thing to do.

Four people have now died from the illness which is brought on by a bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.  It can take up to 70 days after the bacteria has been consumed for the symptoms to show although the  incubation period can be as short as 30 days. Those symptoms include, vomiting, nausea and diarrhea.

There are 21 known cases of listeriosis, another 30 cases are suspected and the Federal Health Minister , Tony Clement, says more cases are expected to surface.

The full recall is expected to cost Maple Leaf Foods, $20 million dollars and should be completed quickly.
