Tobacco use is the single highest cause of preventable illness and death across the Northern Health region. In an effort to reduce the numbers,
Northern Health is taking steps to help cut tobacco use through a grant program and a video project.
The “True North Strong and Smoke Free” community grants support community organizations in reducing tobacco use. Projects can focus on spit tobacco, second-hand smoke, smoking cessation, youth tobacco prevention or awareness about tobacco hazards.
The application deadline for these grants is December 9, 2005 for communities in the Northern Interior and Northeast.
The second program is a tobacco prevention video contest called “Behind the Smokescreen” Funded by Health Canada, the contest gives high shool students a chance to produce a creative video focusing on a tobacco issue. There are some pretty good cash prizes, of $200, $400 por $700 dollars for the student ( or students) who produced the winning video and their school will get the same prize for tobacco reduction resources, or video production equipment.
The deadline for video entries is January 31, 2006.
