Prince George, B.C.- The reconstruction of River Road in Prince George has just been given a financial boost by Ottawa.

According to Transport Canada , under the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative, the City will get a total of $3.5 million for two projects:
  • upgrading of 1.9 km between the Cameron Street Bridge and Foley Crescent; and
  • widening of 1.7 km between Foley Crescent and the CN Fraser River Bridge and installing left turn lanes to access the CN facility.
River Road is the primary road access to CN's Intermodal facility.

The City’s General Manager of Operations, Bob Radloff, says the City is still waiting to get official notice of the funding. “We had identified this project as one of three that we would apply to the Government for funding.   Initially we had identified three projects, this one, the Cameron Street Bridge and an overpass at Highway 16 that would tie into an extension of Patricia Boulevard.”

Radloff says the City was then advised it might have a chance at funding for the bridge or River Road. “We then tailored our application to those projects, and here we are six months later and we are hearing we have been granted the funding.”
The River Road project will see the road raised and a drainage system installed, “ There will be some widening as the road has to be done to Federal standards” says Radloff.

The full cost of the projects is $7 million. The City is responsible for the $3.5 million dollar balance.

Please tell me me get new city managers when we vote out the current mayor and council.
I just hope that this isn't some slapped into place road, but properly done, with a good paved shoulder and actual curbs. Enough room on the side such that a truck can pull over and park or people can bike / run on the road and not in traffic.
Think that one thru lunarguy. Now why would we even want to encourage people to bike or run on a mainly industrial road. Cycling and running are not very condusive in and industrial area!!! Isn`t that kind of over kill???

We have trails all around the City for cycling and walking etc. surely you were in jest. Right????
Cause if you don't put the space there, people will just be in the way of traffic. There still should be enough space for a truck to be able to pull over and park. Check their load, rest, whatever. Stop the city from just laying a bit of pavement and calling it a road.

People need to embrace cycling to work, walking to work, etc.
What no study?????
People can use the River Trail which follows the same route as River Rd. I work in the area and I never use River Rd because of the large trucks but the river trail is really nice.
