Prince Rupert, B.C.- The Canadian Cancer Society’s Cops for Cancer Tour de North rolled into a welcoming ceremony at Prince Rupert’s Mariners Park today, officially ending the seven-day, 826-kilometer cycle tour from Prince George.

Nineteen police officers from 13 communities, one QCI paramedic and a Prince George reporter participated in the event, which raises money for pediatric cancer research and Canadian Cancer Society programs that benefit kids with cancer and their families.

“This is phenomenal. Our very preliminary estimates suggest that we’ve already raised more than $160,000 … and many donations are still coming in,” says Dennis Nore, revenue development co-ordinator for the Society’s northern region of its B.C./Yukon Division.

“We could not have done this without the commitment of all of the Tour de North participants, the generosity of northern B.C. communities and our tour sponsor RE/MAX Realty, and the inspiration we get from young Canadians who courageously confront cancer every day.”

The Canadian Cancer Society’s Tour de North is one of four Cops for Cancer events held annually in B.C. Its counterparts (the Tour de Rock, on Vancouver Island; Tour de Valley, in the Fraser Valley; and Tour de Coast, in Greater Vancouver) will take place over the next few weeks.

Last year, the four events collectively raised $3.2 million.
