Province Boosts Locum Fees for Remote Communities

Prince George, B.C. The Province is increasing funding for  rural doctor coverage. An extra $800,000 is being pumped into the  $2.6 million dollar  program budget.

The extra money means there will be extra financial incentive  for general practitioners and specialists to  provide  locum services  in 60 rural communities in the province.  They may recieve  up to $1,000 per day  based on their skills and the remoteness of the community.

The new guidelines get rid of the flat rate given all physicians, and  provides funding based on the remoteness of the community served.  There are four categories,  labelled A-D with  "A" being the most remote.

 

Prince George, Quesnel, Williams Lake, Ft. St. John,  Ft. Nelson, SMithers, Terrace, Prince Rupert are amopng the communities on the  list of isolated areas.

 

The changes will take place  October 1st.

Locum is Latin for "substitute", as in substitute teachers?
As a former resident of Kitimat, I always find it amazing that Prince George is considered remote!
