Just before 8 a.m this morning the alarms went off at the Northern Linen Building at the corner of 2nd and Victoria in downtown Prince George. Deputy Fire Chief Dale Kronebusch says the fire department was quick to the scene, but the fire "went sideways"
"This is a very old building some say it was built in 1945, and as the years went by, and renovations made, there were new ceilings added here and there. So when the flames started, there was little way to contain it. "
The flames have been held to the Northen Linen building, while the hair style shop next door suffered some smoke damage.
There was no sign of a sprinkler system.
Damage is extensive, with the second floor of offices destroyed. "The real tragedy here" says the Deputy Chief "Is that this company had a fire at its Hart highway operation in August and moved it's operations here, now this"
Two computer hard drives have been recovered and its hoped the data will save some of the invoice information the company needs.
There is no word on how many employees are now off the job. No one hurt and the cause of the fire won't be known until investigators can get inside and take a closer look.
