Prince George, B.C. -  The Premier of Alberta and members of his Cabinet are in Prince George today, meeting with Premier Gordon Campbell and members of his cabinet.

B.C.’s Minister of Forests and Range, Pat Bell, has said the two   governments will be discussing matters of mutual concern, like the mountain pine beetle, the oil and gas industry, the  Highway 16 corridor and the opportunities presented by the Port of Prince Rupert.

Bell says it is most appropriate for this session to be held in Prince George as the issues impact this community and  northern B.C.

While any focus on these issues is a good thing, why now?
Does it have anything to do with an election coming next May and Campbell needs to work on his popularity here in the north?
Basically what they are focusing on is the best way to get BC Resources out of here with no value added. TILMA is a great race to the bottom, to lessen standards to whoever ( usually Alberta ) such that both provinces have the same poor level.

Example being. Before a teacher in BC needed a 4 year degree, now a Alberta teacher can move here with only a 3 year degree and be considered as an equal teacher.
"...Campbell needs to work on his popularity here in the north?"

Probably. If the meetings were never held here in P.G. Campbell would be accused of ignoring the North.

Tough spot to be in...

"Basically what they are focusing on is the best way to get BC Resources out of here with no value added. "

Like the raw log exports that some who post here are defending?
I'd like my standard of living lowered to the same as my relatives in Alberta.

Lunaguy forgot to mention that the BCTF sets the teachers standards on numbers of years to waste to get a degree. The length of time and extra year in BC was to restrict the number of union BCTF members in the market. Similar to the good ol' days where getting a Boilermakers apprentiseship was next to impossible, just to restrict the supply of union workers in the market. BCTF was really PO'd when Trinity Western was able to grant teacher degrees without BCTF propaganda requirements.

This is about the union leadership having too much power and restricting the labour supply. It had to end one day. The BC/Alberta talks are only scary to those powerful union mobsters. It's all about power, and not about the economic possibilites for the rest of the people in BC.

Lunaguy spotted that one.
Hmmmm.... I wonder if they are going to talk about redrawing the border... some in Alberta think that everything on the North side of the divide at Summit Lake should belong to them.... :-)

RRrabbitt - The Peace is pretty much Alberta anyways :) Most people would rather drive to Grande Prairie to do their "big city shopping" than go to Prince George or Fort St John, and a lot of people live in AB and work in BC. And hey, in the winter we're not even on BC time!
To YMDC: The BCTF does not set the standards for teacher certification-the College of Teachers does. And before you go off on another anti-union rant, the BCTF does not control the college. I know you hate unions, but please get your facts straight before attacking them.
John (TILMA lover) Rustad probably arranged for the meeting in PG. He's the big backer for TILMA in the legislature and this way he can claim to have brought something back to his constituents... maybe even sit in on a cabinet meeting?
TILMA is a lowest common denominator set of rules that removes our democratic sovereignty through a treaty that allows the corporate world to operate by their pick of the most convenient rules for what ever their agenda is whether resource extraction, tax and labor laws, the environment, or government. Treaties that disregard our own sovereign rules and regulations should be considered treasonous I think.

WHO KILLED CANADA..

Well, before I go off on another anti-union rant, was it the BCTF's College of Teachers that was blocking the certification of Western Trinity teachers or not?
Well, yes the union was opposed. But since they don't control the college, they were unable to block the certification.
