Prince George, B.C.- The demolition of the Columbus Hotel is wrapping up and the final bill will be handed to the City of Prince George within ten days.
The final cost is not known, as the removal of asbestos was not part of the bidding process, but is the reason why the cost of the demolition will exceed the bid amounts.
“We specifically asked the bidders NOT to include the cost of asbestos removal in their bids” says Scott Bone, the City’s Manager of Supply and Fleet services. Bone says while it was expected there would be some asbestos in the burned out hotel, the amount was not known as the premises couldn’t be inspected. “We knew the boiler was likely wrapped in asbestos, but there was no way to examine the boiler because it was in the basement and we had no access to it.”
It was Western Thermal that submitted the winning, low bid of $46,875.00for the demolition.
The other two bids were considerably higher, with IDL Contractors submitting a bid of $75,690 and Twin River Developments submitting a bid of $275,176.
Bone says it is not unusual to include extra work into the contract after the fact “Given the condition of the building at the time of the bid process, we were unable to determine if the site was contaminated. To this end, its standard practice to negotiate with the successful bidder to include the additional work into the contract.”
The City expects to recoup the money for the demolition from the insurance company handling the claim.
