Prince George, B.C.-   Get set to quit having a back yard burn or a wiener roast in the back yard if the proposal put forward by the PG Air Improvement Round Table is adopted.
Appearing before City Council , Daniela Fisher, PG Air Quaility Managment cordinator outlined the recommendations.

They include sweeping streets in late February ,early March, and  adopting an anti idlying by law in the city .

The recommendations also include the banning of outdoor back yard burning , wiener roasts, although Fisher told Council that this practice is a very small part of the air quality problem.

Councillors had plenty of questions:
Councilor Brian Skakun asked what steps are being taken to have industry reduce their emmissions and to improve air quailty. He asked why aren't we going after the major polluters instead of the back yard fires?
Councillor Scott said we need to educate people about idlying their vehicles and trucks, he asked what can we do if it is -35 , or if you are operating a large truck that uses diesel and you can't turn it off?
Councillor Zurowski said we need to do a lot more work with the permit holders in the city who are allowed to contribute to the air quality under permit.

In its update to Council PGAIR indicated there needs to be more funding for several projects, including:

$5,000 for additional sampling and analysis of “odorous emissions”
$10,000 for anti idling program (this is to include directing city staff to create an anti idling bylaw)
$5,000 for vehicle emissions testing clinic
$5,000 for communications
$15,000 for Wood Stove exchange program

Some of the work still to be done includes the addition of a “nuisance” clause in the clean air bylaw to cover wood burning appliances and have that clause enforced.

The request for funding and a report on the recommendations are expected to be brought back to the next Council meeting.

Bring the gestapo with the invisable bylaw officer when I have a weiner roast for the grandkids. Same ol, same ol. Come up with some small ideas (road dust, idling, weimer roasts) and then have the gonads to request more money for some BS study. Let's get real and start looking where the real polution is coming from. Industry. I've been hearing this crap for way to long. Time for a change at city hall come November.
So what recommendations are targeted at the industrial sources which contribute to our poor air quality?

Let me guess, we need to "engage them in meaningful discussions" or "work with them towards common solutions" or maybe even "put a plan in place, agreed to by all stakeholders, to address the air problems that we all contribute to".

Is there anyone in PG involved in this issue that is willing to be a leader and make some decisions that will have REAL impacts?
How come the airport, now under the City of PG authority and ownership, still conduct horrific burns on a routine basis? Black smoke, all the good things. Dare you check and find out if I'm not right. It has been going on for years. When it stops, I'll stop.
Maybe they ought to sweep the streets more than once a year and leave the back yard weenie roasts alone.
Why not ban barbecues - they create smoke!!The real polluters are the big industry - not the backyard polluters - let us have a study to see how to catch those "weiners burners"! It should also mean the present city council a trip to ?? (Europe) to study the problem.
oh woodwomen I think you might have just given them and idea...lets go to Europe on the tax payers dime!!! I agree w/ all the posts - but...we need industry to keep this city going...the problem, they put industry too close to the bowl and downtown, not much can be done about that. They will never be able to stop industry from being polluters and it's my understanding the for example, the pulp mills are already within the limit. I'm beginning to think that there isn't a solution to this problem, short of moving pulpmills, ashpault plant (STUPID thing to do by the way, should have much farther up the river)...maybe we just have bad air and we either suck it up (excuse the pun) or move. I feel frustrated that this is an ever ending discussion w/ the city but nothing really seems to be getting done. I'm happy that the hair brained idea of Kinsley is dead (or at least it should be)of the bio energy plant in downtown seems to be over! How can we have faith in city council when this kind of an idea is even entertained?
Backyard burning ? Woodstoves ? BBQ ?

A "bowl" full of sillllliness... almost overflowing with stupidity and misdirection.

Trivial pursuit ... PG Edition !

Your council appears to be chasing its own tail.... what will it do when it catches it ?? How embarrassing can it get !!

Get rid of that curdled "brain trust" and get yourself some fresh thinkers around the table. There are REAL problems that need to be dealt with there before more families give up and move away.

Arrghhhhhh.

Good timing for the election, like moms home cooked apple pie - who could say no!

I've been after the city for years to do something about the traffic lights on Queensway at 5th, 4th and 2nd. They should all be removed, because you spend so much time idling at these three irrelavant lights. So much for being serious about idling. There are lots of areas of the city that could have the traffic lights removed or run only a couple hours at peak times. But anti-idling isn't taken seriously by the city at all. Just a joke on us. Bring on the g h gas. (the g h is not green house gas, it is government hotair gas)

City council as usual has there head in the sand on industrial pollution. There are several wood burning plants in PG permitted for 230 mg/dscm or even more as is the case with the local pellet plant. Anyone can do the math and figure out how many tonnes per year of fine particulate are being released by these plants into the atmosphere. This information is all public knowledge made available on the Gov't web site.
These plants burn wood 24/7 at a typical rate of 3000 lbs to 10,000 pounds per hour.
How sad it is a few backyard bonfires are the city council's solution to air pollution.
Thank you ....all of you!!! Another form of government who wants to punish the tax payer for what large industry does. Can we say "NO BALLS"!

Next will be the need to monitor when I take my poo on a daily basis. LOLOLOL
I don't know how much of an impact backyard burning has compared to other sources, but when I was out walking in the bowl yesterday and there were several people burning yard waste in different areas. The smoke was thick and it burned my lungs, so I would think that a ban on leaf burning wouldn't be a bad thing.

Mind you, who is going to enforce a ban on leaf and yard waste burning? Bylaws? Doubtful. They don't seem to want to enforce any bylaws where there might be some sort of confrontation with somebody.

$$$$$$$$ to make some group that effectively hides from the public in PG feel good they are doing something. Council sits by not being able to say "no" because they would look bad to not accept a recommendation from such a group of scientific nerds who do not understand that every now and then they need to stop to do a reality check.

Although I must say, they seem to have figured out that if they take small stuff to Council, they will get their way. If they take any stuff to industry or the province, forget it.
Whyy not ban CN rail from having there trains come threw town, It seems to me like they were the biggest contributer to the pollution in PG in the last year, All cause of there employee's was high on crack and not doing his job properly.
If you notice someone burning in the back yard, take their # down and the bylaw officers do respond and talk to them, they will even go as far as phoning you to let you know that they spoke to the person. Nothing bad happens to the "burner", but they do get a warning.
Willy-Check needs an ESL course and some facts to back up his accusations...
