Prince George, B.C. – Highway 16 West of Willow Bridge is now open after a delay with a single vehicle accident early this morning.

Four men travelling back to Vancouver from a hunting trip in an  F350 Ford Quad pulling a 20ft flat bed deck with an ATV on the back lost control on the icy highway at 6:30am and rolled once towards the ditch.

One male was taken to hospital with non life threatening injuries. The estimated cost of damage to the vehicle and ATV is $75,000.

R.C.M.P are advising the public that winter conditions have arrived especially early in the morning and to take extra caution when driving. Constable Gary Godwin says this accident is a perfect example of what we need for winter conditions, “This was a huge truck, 4 doors, probably 1 ton, you would think this is enough weight, but they didn’t have winter tires or studs and the roads were icy.”

Enough weight? With that amount of weight, no traction and highway speeds, the inertia plus a trailer which tracks independently from the vehicle makes this a very deadly combination compared to a low to the ground, single, light sedan.
Lets go back to high school physics - stopping distance is unaffected by weight since the force of friction and the kinetic energy both depend equally on the mass of the vehicle.

Pretty pictures and fancy calculators here:

Stopping distance is unaffected by weight so long as the coefficient of friction is independent of weight. That is not always the case. With some tire patterns and studs, greater weight can increase the coefficient of friction, thereby reducing stopping distance.
Close the highway! Open a lane! Enough of this BS closing highways. Either that or get the cops to work a little quicker.
They close the highways for the safety of the Emergency personnel and those involved in the accident. There are far to many idiots in this city and most others too that do stupid things when they get impatient. Firefighters and emergency rescue deserve SOME security when they are on the job. Don't be such a selfish ass and deal with the inconvenience with some patience. If it was your butt in the ditch you would ask for the same.
Since they privatized the roads there have been more and more accidents. What happened to sanding the roads?
And you can thank the Liberals for that.
"stopping distance is unaffected by weight"

And this is why a 24 foot cruiser about to cross the bow of a 3000 passenger cruise ship expects the cruise ship to stop or turn to avoid the cruiser, both travelling at the same speed, and gets creamed.

As far as high school physics. Try answering these school questions:

I'll remember that next time Im driving my boat down Highway 16, Gus
that's a pretty big trailer for one ATV. weight restrictions I guess
Stuff like this happens every fall and it will happen every fall going forth. I ditched my truck heading out to Smithers one year when the guy in front of me slammed on his brakes on some black ice and I hit the ditch trying to avoid smashing into him. I was lucky and was able to drive out unharmed. It was a scary situation but there wasn't much that could've been done to prevent it. Once you start going out of control on that stuff the best you can do is try and gain control before hitting the ditch. Luckily I was able to do that and I managed to go into the ditch almost parallel to it as opposed to sliding off sideways and rolling.

Actually, they close the highways now because they do not have enough personnel to direct traffic around an accident scene providing said accident isn't impeding the roadway.
How about the fatal accident a few months ago, just past Bednesti!! Road was closed, traffic backed up, well, pretty much, to Blackwater road!!

People that wanted to go home to Beaverly, maybe Mud River, McBride Timber Rd., and between and beyond!! All points before the accident site!! RCMP, wouldn't let them through!!

What a bunch of crap!! The RCMP of today, do not reflect the RCMP, that I new as a child!! Of course, Tim Hortons did not exist, and common sense, still existed!!

The highway should be open to local traffic. At least to residents before the accident scene.

Do we need more cops??? No, we need the cops we already pay big bucks for, to do a better job!! They too, forget who pays their wages!!

A single vehicle accident, in the ditch!! Give me a break!! Affect so many peoples lives, because of one stupid action??? Give me a break!!

It is all about control..........lol And the law has taken control to a new level lately!!

just my honest opinion

have a great day everyone.

"People that wanted to go home to Beaverly, maybe Mud River, McBride Timber Rd., and between and beyond!! All points before the accident site!! RCMP, wouldn't let them through!!"

Of course not. I wouldn't expect the cops to waste their time checking with hundreds of cars to see where each one wanted to go and individually directing traffic for them. Get real!
