Prince George, B.C.- The Globe and Mail released it’s seventh annual University report card this past week, and for the first time, UNBC was included in the report.

Listed among the smallest universities (with less than 4,000 enrollment), UNBC scored well over all and can expect improvements in the areas where marks were below average.

Overall, the smallest universities received higher marks than their larger counterparts in terms of student satisfaction, class sizes, student-faculty interaction, and quality of education.

All universities ( regardless of size) scored poorly in the category of food services, and many (including UNBC) scored below average marks for residences.

The head of UNBC’s Communications Department, Rob Van Adrichem, says there was really only one surprise in the whole report “I was disappointed to see that all the green efforts at UNBC were not recognized. UNBC has done far more in that category than any of the larger, older universities, yet we weren’t mentioned.” Van Adrichem says    UNBC will have to work a little harder to spread the word about UNBC and all of its positive “green” projects.

UNBC scored a “D” for food services, a “D” for campus pubs/bars, and a “C-“ for  residences.  Van Adrichem says marks should improve for the next survey “The student centre will have a café that will offer some variety on food options and the pub is expected to open soon. As for the residences, we know there has been a need for an upgrade in appliances, and we have been working on that.”

The big picture though says Van Adrichem is encouraging “Overall I think the report shows students are generally happy.”

The green projects at UNBC pale in comparison to other Universities, that is why it shouldn't be mentioned.

There is no site wide recycling for paper, bottles, etc. No place to put them but in the garbage. Only the older buildings have recycling for that.

What about turning off some lights at night time, or how about in building 10 during the day. Has a huge glass front and yet all 4 floors are lights are on. Almost need sunglasses it is so bright.
Obviously they didn't notice that the library elevator is generally not in service, which makes it difficult for handicapped or older students to access the books on the second or third floor. It currently has been out of service since spring. Also, they didn't have time to notice the state of the washrooms (generally quite dirty) and that the doors to the stalls don't have latches about 50% of the time.
The report puts UNBC into the category of very small. There are 14 in that category. 7th or better is above average. 19 categories are shown as measured. UNBC was 7 or higher in 3 of the 19. In my world, that is considerably below average when comparing universities. That is what the report is about. The highest score was 3rd in ease of registration and two 7ths in buidlings & facilities and recreation & athletics.

UNBC has some work to do, or else suggest the globe report is useless.
I have been disappointed about the library elevator too. I did e-mail facilities at UNBC a month ago and this is the response I got:

"Library south elevator suffered major mechanical problems and was ordered shut down for safety reasons in March by facilities staff. Due to the long process involving consultants, engineers, developing a specification, tendering the project and the long delivery times once a successful contractor was selected the actual rebuild was begun Sept 1. The work is expected to be complete on Nov 1."

November 1 is this Saturday. I hope it gets fixed cause this is getting to be way too long for an elevator to be out of service. I have asthma and sometimes I find it difficult to walk to the third floor, especially if I have a chest infection. But the third floor is one of the most quiet places to study.

Other than that, UNBC is a great school and I love it here.
I am sure that it would not have taken that long in a 5 story office building. If it takes that long, a second elevator may be in order.
There is a second elevator actually, but at the opposite corner of the building.
