Project Manager Tony Bennet points out the location of the north retaining wall that will be put in place.
Prince George, B.C.- The plan has been presented for the four laning of Highway 97 south from Continental Way to Sintich Road.
As part of a $27 .5 million dollar project that extends from just north of Rail Road Way to Sintich Road, construction is expected to start in April of 2009.
The biggest area of concern on the stretch of highway was the steep embankment adjacent to the northbound lane approaching the Continental Way overpass.
The final design is not yet complete, but the plan calls for a near vertical retaining wall to be put in place rather than cut too deep into the bank. That wall will rise 3 to 5 meters above the level of the highway.
Project Manager Tony Bennett says there is still some discussion about possibly putting in a second retaining wall on the south end of the embankment.
The area is also a popular crossing for wildlife, and Bennett says that has been addressed with lighting and a centre median.
The plan will see the clearing taking place in January and February and the main construction starting in April with completion in the fall.
The Ministry of Transportation says during construction at least one paved lane in each direction will be open at all times although the speed will be reduced.
