Now that we are getting snow, drivers please slow down. It is so much easier and safer to leave home 5 minutes earlier and thus eliminate speeding , lane jumping and tailgating and less chance of someone getting hurt of killed. Have a good day all.

Great advice BC but most people it seems drive like that whether they are late or not.
I cant believe my street isnt plowed yet!!
Thanks to the CITIZEN NEWSPAPER for not delivering the free newspaper as promised. Nor did we get the SUPER CLASSIFIEDS ( bargain bundle), even after I phoned them and told them it hadn't been.
It isn't just one house hold I live in an apparment complex and no one but subscribers got a newspaper.
So obviously, in my opinion, their word means norhint and they promote laziness on behalf of their delivery people and are more than glad to accept the money from advertisers and not deliver the goods.
You're kidding, right zoom. It's only 7:00 in the morning. They have the main roads, the school bus routes and the city bus routes to plow first and then the subdivisions. They can only do so much unless you're willing to pay more in taxes so the city can hire more employees and get more equipment. I've always thought the city did a great job. Drive slower and leave earlier.
Yes I know acrider54, sad isn't it.
Yes I know acrider54, sad isn't it.
I can't believe my driveway isn't plowed yet!! Guess I won't make it to work. :{
yes mythoughts I am kidding, Just poking some fun at the always negative posters on this forum. I agree that for the most part the city does a decent job during these snowfalls and everyone needs to step up the resposibility and drive safer, help out those that may not easily get around etc. Glad I do have my gas guzzling 4X4 though. Have a great day
Oh, ok zoom. LOL. Me too...glad I have a gas guzzling 4X4. It's weather like this, that I'm really glad.
Further to the Taser story mentioned by quasz, I heard on the CBC this morning that they (CBC) paid to have a number of Tasers tested by an independent lab, using a standardized program. What they found is that 10% of the Tasers tested put out significantly more voltage than Taser International claims, in some cases 50% more. I wonder if over active Tasers are a factor in some of the deaths that followed being taken down and shocked?
As for the man who was tasered 24 times, I wonder what he did to make the fuzz take their pissoff out on him, did he insult their Mothers? The guy claimed he was tasered 36 times, I would have to imagine that it would be difficult to keep track of the hits after ten or fifteen, but a doctor claims he found evidence of 24 hits. Whether the guy is a criminal or not, the conduct of the cops does seem heavy handed.
metalman.
Further to snow plowing. I have lived here for 25 years and this is the first time I am dissapointed in our clearing function.
I am at my desk down town, it is 8.22 a.m. and I have been here for 1/2 hour. The darn parking lot that I pay for parking has not been plowed. The darn street that I drive on has not been plowed. The darn sidewalk I walk on has. Where the heck are the crews.
I have talked to people in Salmon Valley and down the Blackwater. No plows yet!

I understand that at least one bus route has not been cleared yet.

Does this mean that ??
By leaving earlier, i was still late. I have a 4X4 and it got stuck...
BCRacer, Just keep calling the citizen, you rpaperboy will get in lots of trouble, therefore lose his job. I know, it almost happened to me, until the guy was found lying!! Of course that was yaers ago....
The first big snowfall of the season means.........It will not be long before we hear that the City of PG has blown their budget for snow removal.
Listening to city dispatching graders...you would n't believe where their priorities are....
River Road.... The hood....what happened to bus routes?
What the heck are they doing dispatching graders, it has been snowing since 8:00 last night. I would have thought they would have been out on the roads since at least midnight, no?

Have we set the bar to high for these guys?
quit already everyone, it hasn't stopped snowing yet! I worked last night, and I had no trouble getting around. I have good snow tires, front wheel drive, and sensible driving habits! You idiots in your SUV's ,and your soooooooo intimidating 4X4, get off the road, you are a MENACE to everyone, including your selves!!
seriously, I am getting soo sick of people spouting off about cops and tasers. They beak off about people have burn marks on them from tasers. The taser does not burn you, all it does is disrupt the signals to your brain so that you cannot fight with the cops. While it is painful while being administered, there are no after effects. Perhaps instead of standing on your soap box spouting off uneducated opinions, maybe do some research and find out how things really are. The police have a very difficult job to do. And they do it every single day, without thanks. If they did not have the taser as an option, there would be alot more shooting incidents. I would rather be tased than shot. Perhaps we should ask ourselves, what did this person do to end up being in a situation where he needed to be tased. Nobody ever wants to hear both sides of the story. Just way more fun to point a finger.
My Honda Civic managed just fine this morning.
Looking for sandbags? 5th & Carney PetroCan, Mohawk on the hart and Mohawk by Costco. A couple of extra 50 lbs over each wheel make a big difference if your car profile is a little low.
In view of what seems to be happening internationally with banks at the moment, I was wondering if you could advise me correctly.....

If one of my checks is returned marked "insufficient funds", how do I know whether that refers to me, or to the bank???
suck it up princesses.
In my 5 minute drive to work this morning I got stuck 3 times! 5 minutes was actually 20 minutes and with alot of help from strangers, I made to work alive. Thanks to the nice guys out there who will actually get out of their vehicle and push a young lady who needs a hand. And a big BOO to the stuck up drivers who get pissed off at a young lady stuck in the snow and have the heart to honk and finger, but couldnt be bothered to lend a small hand.

I love it!!!

To Runner46;

I just wanted to comment on your thoughts concerning our snow removal. I was born and raised here and for many mnay years I have noticed a patern of snow removal.

When the PG region is under a heavy snow fall warning I have found that the city crews will usually wait to conquer many of the streets until after the heavy snowfall has ceased. This saves them from going back 2 or 3 times to plow the same roads every 6 hour (or so).

"HabsFans" was correct when he commented about the city's snow budget being used up very quickly. That's one of the reasons they "wait" until the bulk of the snow has fallen.

I have mixed feelings about our snow removal. At times the city seems to do a great job and at other times they lack quite a bit in their efforts. I do know this though... I would NOT want to be responsible for the snow removal in any city. You can never make everyone happy all the time. It is a very thankless job.

Drive safe, slow down, and buy "dedicated" quality snow tires and carry a cell phone, a portable heater, a survival kit, GPS system, emergency food rations, and flares... LOL ... and... and...

Have a great day all.

Thank you querty, 3 posts, stuck 3 times. I see a trend.
hey qwerty, what kind of tires do you have? 3 seasons or real winters? oh my, what about studded?
For your pleasure, I'll repost this in hopes it will make your commuting more enjoyable and start the weekend off with a little humour.

Somewhere above the Artic Circle.

It's a beautiful, sunny and overly chilly morning as I sled the Frontier Trail with my exuberant team of Huskies. As I tread along enjoying the beauty of the Great White North, I fail to recognize the brown frozen extrusions on the trail, obviously the remnance of another haphazard dog team. Sure enough my canine companions' desire to investigate the essence causes my sled to topple and spill my load all over the pathway. I curse and cuss the local government and pathways maintenance department as I repack my worldly possessions. What the hell am I paying taxes for?

After my rant, I merrily resume my journey and count my blessings as that was an injury free episode. As I navigate the frozen Tundra at a leisurely yet safe pace, I am startled by the hailing of a portable air horn. After depositing my breakfast in my newly purchased Thermal underwear, I rear my head to locate the source of my hailing siren. OMG!! It's Yukon JackAss with his 18 strong team carrying an oversize load. JackAss has that fearful trail determination under his frost laden brows. Always courteous, he red faces a middle finger salute in my general direction.

To my astonishment he attempts the suicide double ice crust pass. JackASS has failed to notice the large pine around the bend, subsequent evasive action results in our teams intermingling. As I pull my head out of one of his Husky's ass, I ponder why I'm not back in PG waiting for the Amphibex Parade.
"If one of my checks is returned marked "insufficient funds", how do I know whether that refers to me, or to the bank???"

LMAO

"I would NOT want to be responsible for the snow removal in any city."

I dunno, San Diego probably wouldnt be to bad.
1) I shovelled last night and moved a lot of snow. Had to shovel again this morning and moved a whole lot more. If anything was plowed at midnight, then you wouldn't even be able to tell this morning. This is a crazy snow fall, chill out and give the crews a chance.

2) I saw busses stuck this morning - aren't they supposed to be chained up in this weather? Just wondering.

3) What happened to Dear Abby on this site? Sounds trivial, but I'd really like to know.
Remember last year's big snowfall? I made a pass up and down my driveway with the snowblower, then took a couple of pics. After I finished, I e-mailed the pics to a friend of mine in Seattle. His response was "How do you people cope with all that snow year after year?"

You know, we do a very good job of coping with it. We manage to get to work, albeit late sometimes, and the City does get to all the streets eventually, and we carry on. We never make national TV news about our large snowfalls, but tune in to see other towns and cities crippled by lesser amounts of snow, and I am not referring to to Vancouver. I am talking about communities back east.
The city will have a lot of snow to move in the next few days, it should be quite the challenge for them. Getting the equipment up and running and all of the contractors working together.

It is amazing the amount of snow they have to move to keep our main streets clear with in 24 to 36 hours after a major dump.

I am always impressed on the organizational capacity of the street division on the snow removal. They work night and day to get it done. Sure they may be spending $20,000 an hour but it gets done. Kudos to them.

As far as getting stuck, well, maybe a little two wheel driive car with 5 inches of clearance is not the best thing to drive in when there is 10 inches of snow. Eventually your sled will loose traction as it starts to build up underneath. That's why I can never understand why we northerners get all wrapped up in going green with our vehicles. Can you imagine driving one of those hybrid cars out there and your stuck or the traffic is not moving and your watching your battery power going down. Nothing beats an internal combustion engine.
Besides the more fuel you burn, we get more global warming and should be less winter. Yahooo for the north.
Whineo, qwerty has winter tires, thanks. I was just making a comment saying thanks to the people who helped me out and a one finger salute right back to the losers who "waved" at me this morning. Nice strong guys in pickup trucks, I doubt that they will brag to their wives about thier actions today. The snow is going to fall regardless of the whining about it (which I wasn't) because we live in the North. An an import from the Okanagan, I think I handled myself quite well on the roads this AM. TGIF, lets hit the hills and go skiing!
Qwerty, this is not winter. This is only an appy to the full meal deal.

Wait till the compact snow, glazes over and then more snow. Or when it goes down to minus forty, and your running on square tires, or the vehicle does not start up after work.

Skiing, you got to get there and not in a little car like that, you skid out of control and in the ditch. Can you survive out there in minus 15C for four hours. If you slide into oncoming traffic, chances are it will be a bigger vehicle and it will be squash time.

Don't worry about those guys out there not helping you. If your relying on other people to help, then you better stay off the highways in the winter time, or you will be a popsicle.
Hey Chester, 50 lbs over each wheel in the trunk will not do a lot for a car with front wheel drive. Of course it will certainly lower the profile.

Cheers
Taxi, FYI not everyone with SUV or 4X4 are idiots or menaces. I think those who think that way are the real narrow minded idiots. It's the driver not the vehicle type.
Well, sitting safely inside, looking out the window, I must say it is absolutely beautiful. At least, until it rains and it turns into an icy, sloppy, dirty mess. Crappy driving though.
Thanks zoom! I hate it when people rant about those with SUV's. I have one. It's great, if you drive properly. I see just as many idiots out there with 2 wheel drive sliding through intersections and getting stuck, so to call the 4x4 and SUV drivers down is rather silly. I'm thinking a bit of envy is fueling this frustration.
People do funny things.
I ran into a guy the other day at the gas station who was putting 4 sandbags on the floor in the back seat?
He claimed that with front wheel drive it really helps, and balances it better as wheel.
Sort of makes sense.
I think sandbags in the trunk in a fwd might take some weight of the front wheels making for less traction?
taxinapothole, great remark about insufficient funds.I took the liberty to pass it onto several people who also enjoyed it.
I just wanted to share this article I read this morning. I think it is one of the most informative articles I've ever read and I think it touches on a most important subject that will drive events throughout the world over the next decade... whether it be economic, political, terrorism, or food security, and nationalism... those issues will all be driven by the topic of this article.

For those that do read it... I challenge you to in place of agri-food industry in 3rd world nations.. think of the same concept as it relates to our oil and natural gas industry here in BC, or even our forest industry for that matter. The similarities are uncanny.

After reading this I came away thinking in BC we have the provincial liberals as the enablers, champions, and facilitates of these kinds of policies used against our province undermining our provincial sovereignty for the benefit of multinational corporate neo-colonialists out for not only our resource wealth... but in fact our independence as well.

We can never stop it unless we understand it, so I urge everyone to take a minute and read this article and educate yourself a little bit about how this world operates around us. If we understand we can recognize their motives and prevent the damage before it is done.

If you have 4x4 fercrissakes use it instead spinning away, polishing intersections & holding up traffic worse than it already is. Or sell it if you're not gonna use it. Also, it's winter - lose the mud tires.
Happy snow days!
With all this talk of our snowed in roads brings to mind a comment from my who is an outside worker for BC HYdro.
They have been making a big thing about safe work practices. They were told they can have tires installed on their work vehicle any time, BUT not permitted to get "dedicated" snow tires. The pin heads in Vancouver have no idea what it is like outside of the lower mainland!
Up here safety means snow tires.
I drove past a stuck tow truck just now. Wonder if I coulda got $40 to pull him out?
You have to admit that we have the most beautiful snow so pure and white. Take it slow and enjoy the wonders of beautiful BC.
BY the way...I feel very good about the new council and mayor.
Have a great day!
Aside from a half ton truck those that load sandbags into their car should remember that the bigger load you have the more power it will take to keep your dream boat on the road going forward. A car already has a good balance. Notice who the balance changes when you have two people in the back seat.

And what are snow tires? Have worne out a number of sets of snow chains.

Cheers
My daschund would like to remark that if you think you've got problems driving in the snow...trying having 4" legs and having to find a spot to pee! It's all perspective.
Them dash hounds is summer dawgs. You put them away come September, and git outcher Whippets for this deep snow time. They can pee standing up you know.
Whippet good!
metalman.
"Now that we are getting snow, drivers please slow down"

If I do that, I get stuck.
Thank God for all the snow. It certainly keeps the road dust down.
I have found in my FWD car that a sand bag or two placed over the rear wheels helps out a lot in braking. Also it helps stop the back end from sliding out on a curve if you have to take your foot off the gas. I believe that is why I see so many FWD vehicles off the road and serious head on crashes on curves. When the engine is not under power it applies drag to the front wheels and the back end will slide out. When the back end starts out on a FWD you need some power to bring it back. Myself I believe FWD is a dangerous vehicle to the average driver. Takes more skill to drive.
I grew up in a CANADIAN city which had many snowfall days as we are having. 8"+ was sort of the norm every few weeks.

Them guys in that City were very smart as I am learning. They realized that:

1. nice fluffy snow piles up on the roads
2. piled up snow on the road gets pushed around by vehicles and looses its fluffiness.
3. snow that looses its fluffiness causes ruts.
4. snow that looses its fluffiness causes accumulated snow at intersections
5. ruts and intersection accumulated snow cause cars to drive into each other whether the driver wants to or not.
6. big trucks with blades on the front can move snow that has lost its fluffiness and make streets smother than those potholed summer streets.
7. the sooner those big trucks with blades start work, the sooner they are done and the sooner traffic can move and the less accidents there will be.
8. when the trucks with blades remove 4" of snow after it has fallen, the traffic has a maximum of 5" to drive through if there is a total snowfall of 9".

I know Vancouver people probably think that the rest of the country lives through this kind of snow clearing. Not so!!! What do they know about snow, eh?????
"Qwerty, this is not winter. This is only an appy to the full meal deal. Wait till the compact snow, glazes over and then more snow. Or when it goes down to minus forty, and your running on square tires, or the vehicle does not start up after work"

Sorry He Speaks. IMHO, today was FAR worse than the average driving conditions during a PG winter. Colder temps means light fluffy snow, not the wet crap that gets instantly packed down like we had today, especially with the volume we had. The main roads out there today are at least navigable, although in many places you are only doing 20-30 km/h because of all the washboard. I thought for a second that I had my pontoon boat on the back of truck heading down a logging road to get into some trout, LOL.

But in any event, conditions like today are about as bad as they get for driving around here. Heck, I even managed to get my 4WD truck stuck and needed a push to get out. Stay off the side roads and areas not well compacted for a while yet :)
#10. A (good) snow plow driver will slow down when there is gravel on the roads and oncoming traffic in order to not take out other drivers windshields. Please and thank you.

I just wanted to say thanks to a couple of city employees on the snow removal crew.

First, a big thank you to the bombadier driver who greatly assisted myself and my tow truck driver when we were stuck this afternoon. I am greatly appreciative.

Second, a thanks to the loader operator who worried so much about my lack of exercise that, as he watched me finish shovelling my driveway, left me a nice, compact pile three feet deep all the way across, piled to five feet on one side and compacted with six inches of ice on the other. I appreciate your kindness in giving me another two and a half hours of exercise in the rain.
I lived in Red Deer for many years and they never plowed the side streets. Anyone who complains about PG snow removal ain't been around. Spring break up meant small cars stuck in the middle of the road high centered on breaking up ice. I couldn't believe how quickly streets were cleared when we moved here.
yes dow7500, we are very spoiled here. I belive it is the same in Calgary, they bdon't plow the residential streets!!

Be thankful, oh merry whiners!!
It is just so darn beautiful, the snow on the trees and the whole scene. Too bad we have to drive.
I have found a couple of sandbags in my trunk stops my car from swerving. Trouble is, I can't lift them into the trunk.
Any help out there?
Looks to me with all this snow like global warming/climate change is postponed until a later date. Or is this snow because of climate change/global warming? Either way you can use it in an argument fer either side. I will wait.
Here's a song for you qwaszxter..some of the lyric sort of fits if you put the cheating in the video aside.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wXBS9ABnQ8&eurl
I had today off and had a lot of running around town to do in my nice new 08 1ton 4x4 crewcab.
I have never had so many laughs in a good long time. Thankyou to all those that supplied the entertainment.
One guy thought it would be good to stop in the middle of the road to clear the wiper blades of ice and then was stuck there. Beep, beep have a nice day I said as I drove by him. I was totally amazed at some of the things people did out there today.
A class one driver being trained by one of our local training companies was pulled off in the Esso station at 5th and the bypass.
The trainee was shovelling and the trainer was supervising, LMAO.

Again thankyou for the laughs.
