Nechako River Rises 1 Meter in Eight Hours But Creates No Problem

Work continues at the Cameron Street Bridge despite the back up of water and ice.
Prince George - The Nechako River has risen more than one meter in the last eight hours as an ice jam has begun to form at the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako River.
(at right, the ice build up is evident at the confluence of the two rivers)
As of 2pm. Thursday the Nechako River had taken a sudden rise in levels. The current levels are posing no problems to nearby properties at present.
City Manager Derek Bates says the City has been holding meetings with the Ministry of Environment and PEP in response to the rise of the river levels.
Bates says’, “we don’t anticipate a repeat performance of what took place last river on the river”. Last year a large number of homes and businesses were flooded out by the fast rising waters of the Nechako just after Christmas and continued well into the New Year. Bates says the Ministry of the Environment and the City's Flood consultant both indicate there is a low probability of a flood event.
The City Manager says "we are discussing the matter with a team of people who were involved in last year’s efforts with a view to getting their thoughts on the issue."
Bates says the Nechako has lots of capacity this year as it was very low when the big freeze started.
As of 2pm. Thursday the ice had begun to back up as far upstream of the mouth of the Fraser and Nechako to the Cameron St Bridge. It is not posing a problem for those working on that structure.
