Nechako River Rises 1 Meter in Eight Hours But Creates No Problem

Work continues at the Cameron Street Bridge  despite the back up of water and ice.

Prince George -   The Nechako River has risen more than one meter in the last eight hours as an ice jam has begun to form at the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako River.

(at right, the ice build up is evident at the confluence of the two rivers)

As of 2pm. Thursday the Nechako River had taken a sudden rise in levels. The current levels are posing no problems to nearby properties at present.

City Manager Derek Bates says the City has been holding meetings with the Ministry of Environment and PEP in response to the rise of the river levels.

Bates says’, “we don’t anticipate a repeat performance of what took place last river on the river”.  Last year a large number of homes and businesses were flooded out by the fast rising waters of the Nechako just after Christmas and continued well into the New Year. Bates says  the Ministry of the Environment and the City's Flood consultant both indicate there  is a low probability of a flood event.

The City Manager says "we are discussing the matter with a team of people who were involved in last year’s efforts with a view to getting their thoughts on the issue."

Bates says the  Nechako has lots of capacity this year as it was very low  when the  big freeze started.

As of 2pm. Thursday the ice had begun to back up as far upstream of the mouth of the Fraser and Nechako to the Cameron St Bridge. It is not posing a problem for those working on that structure.

raise river rd again????
You could see this coming 2-3 days ago as soon as the temperature dropped enough for the ice to start forming on the edges. I think it could easily be a repeat of last year if conditions are right and could just as easily break a new channel through our downtown, and there is nothing we can do to stop it at this point if it decides to do that.
The fraser is jamming up pretty good behind northwood pulp..Should be interesting to see what the nechako will do.. There is lots of ice coming down.
"team of people involved in last years efforts" I think someone with some brains should be consulted this year, and please let it be someone with knowledge of cost restraints. What was the final price tag of the construction flops of last years so called efforts, does anyone remember? (my favorite being the hot water piping, what did it run for 13 hours in total then our city realized Canfor was going to charge for the hot water), what a joke!!!
We missed the oportunity to dredge so we better dig out the phone number for the AMPHIBEX people. They were the only ones involved last year that had any intelligent solutions.
LET THE GAMES BEGIN !
What a surprise, eh? And this winter is supposed to be colder than last winter...
lots of capacity as river was very low this year. Lots of capacity to have an ice jam. The water is suppost to run under the ice not move the ice in front of it till it reachs a point where it is to shallow for the ice to move causing an ice jam. Going to be a repeat of last year it looks like.
blow it up before it becomes to big and make sure the charge is big enough to clear out the channel. Cost a lot less than last years fiasco.
No fear of flood... this week.
I live on the P.G. Pulpmill rd and I went to work for 4 hours and I saw a huge difference in that time. If the river rose 1 meter today what is it going to do when the temp. reaches -30 tomorrow? I sure as hell wished they had dredged the river this year, the city knows that dredging is the solution, what are they waiting for, I know a REPEAT preformance, and to hell with everyone and businesses that were affected. Take away our jobs and homes that is what the city does best. Well our sump pumps are ready to go both of them.
Gee I wonder what the Ministry of Environment think of the boom lift being in the water, by any chance would it be diesel fired or what about the axle grease.
I don't care what anybody says....

DREDGING THE CONFLUENCE OF THE NECHAKO AND FRASER IS THE ONLY SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM.
WHEN ARE THESE INCOMPETENT LEADERS GOING TO WAKE UP AND SMELL THE BACON?

Wonder if those living along the Nechako have flood insurance this year?
Wanna bet we taxpayers get the bill for homeowner losses this year.

I remember during the last flood a certain citizen that lived on Pulpmill Rd refused others attempts at running water pump hoses across their properties to try and help their neighbours. You know who you are and should be ashamed.

"The City Manager says "we are discussing the matter with a team of people who were involved in last year’s efforts with a view to getting their thoughts on the issue."

LMAO, is this team like one of our BC teams such as the Cougars or the Lions or the Canucks? Get my drift?

I hope we the taxpayers are not paying for that chat session. Look where they got us last year and now that flooding is threatening us once again they are talking to LAST YEARS TEAM!

Northman...The ice you see is only ice that is on the surface of the river and has no effect on the Nechako. The Fraser ice backing up around Northwood or at the mouth of the Nechako means nothing in regards to the icejam on the Nechako. The Fraser has no effect on the Nechako Jam.
The gravel bars on the Nechako are the only cause of the Nechako icejam problem. Get rid of them and we can all sleep at night once again.

Common sense you have it correct but, cost restraints are not the issue, people that don't know what they are doing that are spending our taxdollars is the issue.

This problem needed to be fixed months ago and the DOLT's have done NOTHING.

Sorry all this year I am unable to assist in the flood crisis as I am out of town for a while. Good luck.
Can we just repost last year's posts? Sort of a waste of time to go through the same thing again unless someone has something new to report.

Do you know how long that channel is and how many tons of explosives will be required to do a job like you suggest?

Excavators and cats were the tools required when the time was right. Unfortunately that time has passed.

If you knew anything about Genieboom's you would know that isn't an issue.

I believe the Amphibex idea was the result of Heidi, please give credit to her.
AMPHIBEX had no solutions. They knocked out some ice however in order for the machine to operate it needed a clear channel. If you have a clear channel, then you have water flowing, and therefore no need for AMPHIBEX. They almost lost their machine in the river, became a safety issue, were terminated early on their contract, paid, and sent back to Quebec. You will not be hearing from them again.

What really saved the day was the channel that broke through Cottonwood Park and allowed water to go around the jam.

Seems we may have to go through another flood before we get to solving the problem by dredging.

Stop fooling around with the rivers. They were here long before us and worked very well. We had no problems until industry started polluting them.
