PRINCE GEORGE - The kind acts and volunteerism of Prince George residents will be honoured tonight at the Angel Among Us Awards during Winterfest 2008, announced Prince George-Mount Robson MLA Shirley Bond, who donated four awards to be presented at the event.

The awards ceremony will be held on the grounds of Studio 2880 on 15th Avenue, with opening ceremonies beginning at 6 p.m.

"Our residents have a long, proud history of volunteerism because they know giving back their time and effort makes Prince George a stronger community," says Bond. "I feel privileged in helping recognize our 'angels' and I'd like to congratulate all the nominees for their dedication and commitment. It's the hard work of our residents and organizations like Volunteer Prince George and the Community Arts Council that has allowed Prince George to have the highest percentage of volunteers per capita in B.C."

The Angel Among Us Awards celebrate acts of kindness and compassion in Prince George. Sponsored by the Community Arts Council and Volunteer Prince George, the awards include four categories: Little Angel (ages 12 and under), Teen Angel (ages 13 to 19), Big Angel (adults) and Business Organization Corporate Angel.

More than 50 nominations were submitted by residents and businesses. These nominations will be displayed on the Angel Wall at WinterFest 2008 from December 18 to 23 at Studio 2880.

"I'm very inspired by these amazing people. Their stories should motivate each one of us to find a way to make a difference," says Bond.

Winterfest 2008 will include entertainment and multiple events such as Santa's Workshop, Gift Shoppe and Goodies; Family Fun Days on Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Senior's Day on December 22
from noon to 4 p.m.

According to a 2004 Statistics Canada survey, Prince George had the highest percentage of volunteers per capita anywhere in B.C. at 62 per cent. Both the national and provincial number of volunteers per capita according to the same survey is 45 per cent.

Volunteers make the real world go around. Find out who is serving the needs of our community and you will identify the heart of our community. Many, many individuals will never be nominated or recognized on the Awards List. Mainly because they would rather not. Some are visible, some are not and that is the way many prefer it. We are fortunate to live in a community where giving exceeds the national average by alot.
