TIPS FOR STRESS FREE HOLIDAY TRAVEL

Prince George, B.C.  — It's the most wonderful time of the year, or so the popular holiday tune promises. However, for travelers, it can be a stressful month. Whether you're headed to the airport for a business trip or a much-anticipated visit to see family or friends, here are a few words of advice from a holiday travel professional, your local travel agent!

 “It isn't too late to book a flight, and you might be surprised to discover what deals still exist for travel during the quiet period between Christmas and New Year's. If you have some flexibility in airports (access to a smaller regional airport versus a major one, for example) and departure times (you don't mind flying out very early in the morning or late in the evening), your travel agent may be able to find some very affordable last-minute seats for you,” said Sue Armstrong, Uniglobe Sunburst Travel and Cruises Ltd. owner.

The same advice applies if you need a hotel room, a train seat, a rental car or even a cruise. Yes, selection is often limited during peak travel times, but keep in mind that travel agents have access to inventory that the public does not. For the lowest rates and fares matched to the product best suited to your needs, a travel agent is your best source. When it comes to determining whether a compact car will comfortably fit a family of five plus luggage, or whether you can affordably upgrade to business class, don't guess. Ask an expert.

Don't play "last minute" when it comes to arriving at the airport on the day of your flight, however. Ask your agent for an advance seat assignment and print out your boarding pass the night before. Check your ticket carefully; some charter and other airlines ask passengers to reconfirm their reservations by phone 24 hours before departure. On the day of travel. Check the great Prince George Airport website www.pgairport.ca for last minute flight status. Arrive at least two hours before a domestic departure and three hours before an international flight. Add extra time if you intend to purchase food for your flight, exchange currency or browse the duty-free shops.

Pack lightly and avoid checking in suitcases, if possible. Remember that any gels or liquids in your carry-on must adhere to the 3-1-1 rule:
  • they must be in three-ounce containers or smaller;
  • the containers must fit comfortably in a one-quart-sized, clear plastic zip-lock bag; and,
  • only one bag is allowed per passenger. Never place wrapped gifts in your carry-on; bring along a gift bag and some gift-wrapping tissue to use after you arrive.

Consider sending your luggage ahead by using a courier service.

Book your taxi, town car or airport limo early and call the company the day before to confirm. If you're driving yourself to the airport, leave plenty of time to negotiate traffic and to find a parking spot. Be prepared to park some distance from the terminal as parkades and nearby overflow lots fill up quickly this time of year.

Keep an eye on your belongings. The less you take with you, the less you'll have to worry about, but since you probably want to stay connected and entertained on the road, make sure your carry-on bag has a safe, lockable or zippered compartment in which to store your laptop, cell phone, PDA, iPod or MP3 players. Don't place items on the floor when using restroom facilities. Carry bags and purses with shoulder straps that are long enough to be worn across your chest, not hung loosely from one shoulder.

Stress-free holiday travel is possible with some advance planning, a helpful travel agent and a positive attitude.
