Burns Lake – Police are warning about a new scam to surface, this one in Burns Lake. People are receiving phone calls from a 443 area code, or the Pennsylvania area code saying that their car warranty is about to expire.

A conversation takes place and the caller will ask for $200 dollars to sell them an extended warranty. They will ask for personal bank information, including pin numbers to access accounts.

Police say they have been unable to confirm that these calls are legitimate and the caller did not answer police questions when they were contacted.

Police are asking the public to use caution about giving out personal banking information to anyone over the phone or the internet.

The possible scam first surfaced in Burns Lake when police began receiving a number of calls from the public.

My husband and I have had two calls like this in the last week. They have left messages both times. We have not returned the calls simply because they were not even specific as to which vehicle it is. And not to mention, we are not interested...
We had no idea it was a scam....
When will people learn...
unless you are seeking out the information, that goodwill call probably isn't goodwill.
Just like if it sounds too good to be true..
it probably is...
how about the winning lottery, that you never bought a ticket for???
right....BS!
I had a call like this on my answering machine
I had the same call. I asked them what type of car did I own, and they hung up right away.
I had one of those calls too --- she wouldn't answer all my questions except to say she was calling from Maryland. She eventually switched me to a guy who said he was calling from Atlanta. I toyed with him until he got disgusted and didn't want to talk to me anymore --- he got tired of making up answers to my questions.
I had two calls as well, and hung up immediately. I do not make donations, answer survey questions or any other questions by phone, nor do I give any information or listen to how I have won this or that,I do not entertain fools by phone. My standard answer is "no thank you I am not interested" and I hang up pronto, before they can take a breath and give any retort or spiel. That goes for the blind, wheelchair athletes, etc. You do not know who you are dealing with so I am immune to any plea, sob story, or whatever. Call me and if I don't know you, I hang up. It is a system that has served me well and I have taught my children to do the same.
You know all those free prizes at homeshows and fairs, You fill out your name, address and phone #...... guess what, there is a winner, but the names, and numbers are sold to these scammers.

thus nothing really is for free.
Giving out PIN number and banking info? That's just crazy talk.

I have had two calls; one came through on the answering machine and one I hung up on. The calls I had were: Press 1 for something and Press 2 for the other. It had to do with a car warranty.
This scam was been going around on the coast for about a year.

Had 2 Calls like it. First Rule, you never never press any Numbers no matter how good it sound, Second Rule for Voice Calls like Telemarketers, just tell them you will rip there Phone out if they ever call again, the Fun is on you remember they called you!
