Prince George, B.C.-  Council for the City of Prince George  has offered support for the  idea of  video cameras on  B.C. Transit buses.

The cameras would be installed in a cost sharing arangement with B.C. Transit although when that might happen has not been determined.

Director of Operations, Bob Radloff, says  B.C. Transit has yet  to offer full details on  the legal implications and how privacy issues would be handled. The cameras are supposed to be a deterent to  vandalism  and  to violence against drivers  or passengers. "In 2008 we had a serious assault on one of our  drivers" says Radloff who adds,  the cost of the program   could be covered  by  reductions in vandalism, as  that  repair bill was $10,000 last year alone.

There are still questions to be answered,  including  providing access to the video  by the RCMP,  who stores the  video, and who  will review the video should such review  be required.

I think this a good idea...the only people I can think of that will complain would be those who have or may have something to hide. There are very few places one can go today and not be under the watchful eye..good for the law abiding not so good for the rest...
poor rest!
When the new buses came in last year (or was it in 2007?) they had video cameras. They were removed after a while. So, I take it that the video cameras will be put back in place (in the new buses) and will be installed in the older buses? Good news.
Carful, BCRacer, it's a slippery slope. Under your logic, you wouldn't object to cameras being placed in your home... you know, for safety.
Carful = Careful
In a public places cameras should be allowed. Places like homes, offices and rest rooms should be considered private and should be free of cameras unless in the case of public washrooms there is a lot of vandelism. Still can't understand why someone feels the need to destroy a washroom.
Slippery slope MrPG? not really...said nothing about cameras in private areas...didn't think a bus was a private area?
And I believe there are a lot of homes with security cameras...and if I felt the need mine too would have one as well...

But anything take to extremes could indeed become a slippery slope....the bus and taxi cameras, I think are good....public access areas as well....(sorry washrooms exempt downnotout)
There is a huge difference between installing a video camera in your home if you choose to, and having the Government install one for your safety.

Radloff states that they had one case of assault, and vandalism of approx $10,000.00 and for this they want to install video cameras in every bus, putting thousands of people under surveillance. Seems a little extreme.,

The students at UNBC were very upset when they had to have their fingerprint taken to gain access into the Northern Sports Centre, so maybe they will have enough balls to raise hell about this infringement on peoples right to privacy.

If one or two acts of assault and a few thousand dollars in vandalism warrants surveillance cameras in transit buses, then what would you suggest we do for all the home invasions, and assaults on citizens, along with the break and enters, that take place in the Province, and this Town every year.

According to the transit company and the city councillors, the obvious answer to the question would be to install video camera's in every home, and therefore reduce these crimes.

All in favour, pull your heads out of the sand or where ever you have them buried and give up some more rights.
