Prince George, B.C. – There is a new phone service available in Prince George. The new service has resulted in a staffing  increase of 15-20% in Prince George.

Shaw, which is normally known for its cable tv, radio and internet service is now in the phone game. This is not like Vonage which is linked to your computer, this IS like Telus, and it will have very competitive pricing.
Shaw first got into the phone business in 2005 and has already been operating this kind of digital phone service in cities like Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg, Vancouver and Victoria.

If it's anything like the cable tv service I had for the last 3 years, they can keep it.
I love my Bell Expressview ;-)
Lets just see how has the best prices.... Thats who I'll go with.
PGDriver
How about string and a 2 cans, costs you nothin?
Same old thing, just go after the easy money and leave the rural area to Telus, no high speed Internet from Telus or Shaw for us in the sticks just Wireless at a high cost!
Is this a news story, or a commercial for Shaw? I'm so confused.
It sure does sound like a commercial to me....

a little misleading too...

My Vonage phone isn't connected to a computer, it's connected to the same cable the shaw internet is.... so in fact it is a real phone (Just like telus)

and you know what, it's not like telus at all!!! $22 per month gets me 500 anywhere in North America minutes, yup no long distance bills (Shaw can't claim that) also includes call display, voicemail and a whole bunch of other stuff both Shaw and telus charge for....

Pretty much telus free around here, (Virgin Mobile for cell) Been on Vonage for 3 years today and never missed a call!!!

It would be nice to see a properly researched story though instead of this poorly written infomercial for shaw....

Come on Opinion 250 you are better than this

Was that last post a commercial for Vonage? I kid.

Anyway, can't blame Opinion250 entirely, Shaw was doing a major media blitz today to get the word out. There were 'news' stories on the radio as well as conventional commercials.
Haha sorry about that, but..... equal coverage is always good :)

The real good news story buried in this one is the addition of staff at shaw.... 15 to 20% not sure what that number is is it 5 people or 10 or ????? Maybe Opinion 250 could research that one out a little more, In an event not too many companies adding people in PG right now.....

I didn't mean to beat on shaw because the cable and internet service I have is great (well except for the content and you can't blame that on shaw), and they are great in the community,

I have never heard of Vonage, sounds too good to be true~~~not doubting you just wondering where to go to check it out!
This is the first time a competitive phone service (not VOiP like Vonage using internet lines which, in some cases, are provided by SHAW) has been offered in Prince George. SHAW's phone service is a dedicated phone line. It has to be because land line is considered a necessity by the CRTC ( regulating body). For instance, there had to be an assurance that if the cable tv is on the fritz, you can still dial 9-1-1.
I suppose I could have made it more like a commercial, detailing the price packages, telling you there are no extra fees for 4-1-1 and that the 9-1-1 service is enhanced but no, I decided just to say basically "hey folks, there's competition here, you do your homework and make your own decision." While we did ask just how many new jobs this meant for P.G. we were advised Shaw never details exact number of positions as they don't want to tip their hand to the competition.
Mr. P.G. I continue to be amazed at why you insist on reading this site, you obviously don't like us, you slam us at every oportunity, but that's o.k., I am looking for a weekend reporter because this working 24/7 365 days a year can be a little tiresome. Are you interested? You seem to have all the right answers about journalism. The pay is competitive and the benefits are great. Give me a call if you think you are up to it.

LMAO, good one Elaine.
Elaine, you either have been working too hard or not reading my posts too clearly. Yes, some are critical, but I have to call 'em as I see 'em -- I'm sure you can understand. I'm sorry if I'm not 100% sunshine, but nobody is on this site, not even you.

I'll take up the job offer Elaine. I read Opinion250 almost every day and LOVE the site (especially being local news and events)
This is the blurb that was put out by The Vancouver Sun when Shaw brought the service to Vancouver in 2006

Here are some key words in that article:

The service Shaw has launched in other markets is $55-per-month Voice-over-Internet-Protocol telephone service that includes unlimited long distance in North America, voicemail, call forwarding, call waiting, call display, call return and three-way calling.

Shaw's phone package is more expensive than VoIP services such as Vonage ($40 per month) and Primus ($50), however at its Victoria launch, Shaw president Peter Bissonnette said his company could offer a dedicated phone network and 24-hour technical service.
I find this interesting because I don't have a land line... I refuse to deal with Telus (Virgin and Bell). I also figure my cell phone is likely to give me cancer after it microwaves my brain....

So I was just thinking the other day it would be great if a person could get a package that had internet, land phone, and cable all in one reduced rate package... thats what this kind of looks like to me, so its a good heads up.
Look Shaw Cable has done at times the impossible for me. So what ever All I have to say is it's about time they came up here.
Bundle everything together, and it's a pretty good deal. Internet, Cable and Phone and best of all, I can ditch Telus. I can't believe I pay $44 per month for a simple land line and a few options. This does not even include long distance, which I subscribe to through another company. With Shaw, I'd be paying $22 per month and they give the same long distance rates I have already. It's a no brainer and any competition in this town should be brought to our attention.
Here are the Shaw rates just so everyone is singing from the same song sheet:

The basics = $24.95 stand alone (long distance extra)
Lite = $34.95 stand alone (long distance extra)
comprehensive = $65.00 stand alone
