I see we got another huge jump in gas prices...price of crude is still low..

wouldn't be surprised to see them edge the price back up to 99.9...would give them a huge profit margin...

haven't mastered the bicycle on ice thing yet so I guess I will be stuck with whatever price they throw at us...

bus is pretty much out...doesn't run where I want to go, let alone when I want to go there....

enough of my rant...
have a great day all...see the snow is falling again...
I was just thinking how incredibly lucky that dude in the Klassic Autobody ad on this site is to be standing behind that tree.
Why can't drivers use their signal lights properly. Either the don't use them or they slam on the brakes and indicate the turn when they are turning the wheel to make the turn. Lane changes? Forget it, 80% of drivers do not signal lane changes.

Gas prices, If at the going rate, nine cents per liter per $10.00 raise in the barrel, we'll be paying around $2.00 p/l next summer. Check my math, I'm not very good at it.
So the price of oil goes up $8+ and gas prices in PG goes up 10 cents - strange that it was stuck at 74.9 forever but in less than 4 hours it can climb that quick.
Was the gas in their tanks not purchased at the lower price?
Carbon clean tax on a natural gas bill - thought natural gas burned cleaned?
Cannot take a bus so will continue to support profit making "gouging" gas companies!!
Hey people. Just because your landlord is plowing your apartments parking lot, doesn't mean you can park on both sides of the main road reducing it to one lane around a corner. I little snow on the ground doesn't mean you can disengage your brain.
I never drove a car and have no problems getting around on my mountain bike. But I spent my carbon tax credit on parts for my bike so I can cycle the roads in winter. I didn't spend it on gas and then bitch about high gas prices.
What about the bikes downtown who think they own the road. Someone will get run over real soon with the snow covered roads downtown. Bikes have to learn they are not the only ones on the road and that they are supposed to obey traffic regs.
How can a person who rides a bike and has never driven a car even know what the traffic rules are if they have never got a license?
who cares man takes you half a second to move and if you hit me I lose and lose big. Just because you are to arrogant to be cool for half a second. And another thing I ware a helmet and yes I obey the rules of the road which bikes have to obey as well. That means you have to share the road. We have to obey the same laws dude.
I don't mind sharing the road with a dude who is following the rules. It's like the ones who go through red lights or dart across the road man. Same road- same rules dude.
What about the people that order their meals in the Tim Horton's drive through... and all I want is a quick coffee on my way to work... and the car in front is full of people ordering meals.... urg So this is an open complaint to those timbits in case they don't know who they are. lol

Also I don't understand why the stop-light at Ferry and highway #16 has a long delay for the Ferry-green and yet a quick red for the highway traffic... shouldn't it be the other way around? Is it simply a matter of switching the wires, because it seems that backwards to me?

As a horrible result of the 250+ children bombed to death in Gaza by American made weapons in the last week... Americans should finally start to question why they support such methods of engineering for their firm two-state solution... and I think its time to see the merit in certain natural and universal human rights the old American nation was made great standing up for.
So far I think this is the most important news article of the year....

This mornings bonehead award goes to buddy on Ospika in front of the Smurf appartments at the start of the S-curve.
He drives down the left turn lane and runs into the snow bank then goes snake all over the road in front of me.
After he regained control and I avoided smoking him, I flashed the beams at him and went by him. He didn't like me flashing him.

What a KNOB.
Pay attention when your driving you idiot and this crap wouldn't happen.
To the guy making chicken noises and yelling at patrons in Tims on 15th and Ospika. Take your meds!!
I am sick and tired of the companies that are after the council to reduce their tax's. When they were profiting millions of dollars per year did they offer to pay more in order to relieve that paid by the rest of us? Now we are to cover the cost of their miss management of funds. I don't know about the rest of you but I am tired of being taxed through the eye teeth.

This is to Terason Gas by next winter I am going to have one of the wood burning stoves outside to heat my home you won't be gouging from me any more.
It looks like we have a holier than thou opinionator here; Chris, using your carbon tax rebate to buy bike parts does not make you a hero, sorry. Anybody who buys into the whole save the earth/seals/spotted owl/whales/trees/toothless old guy etc./etc./ thing cannot see the big picture, imho. The current flavour is 'carbon' but that, and all that goes along with it, is just the latest manufactured crisis meant to get the citizens up in arms; OMYGOD! the planet is falling apart! WE'LL ALL BE KILLED!!!! Wait two years and see what flavour the catastrophe of the month is, I guarantee you it will be something else 'just discovered' like when people exhale, a small starving child dies in Biafra; Bill Clinton will be okay though, he told the world that he did not even inhale. I think anyone who has the ability to, and chooses to ride a bicycle instead of owning and driving a car is being very responsible. We cannot all live and work downtown though, and many of us choose to live away from town, naturally that means that we will have to burn some sort of fuel in order to interact with society and put bacon'n beans on the table. We should all lean back and take a hard look at why there always seems to be some sort of crisis or catastrophe about to end life as we know it. Read some history, go back twenty, thirty, forty and fifty years, how many of these world changing events had even been invented back then? And of those that were, what was the result? I checked outside this a.m. it looks to me like we still have the force of gravity and I think the sun will rise today. It is all about P-L-M (Politicians, Lawyers, Media) They all thrive and profit from chaos & crisis. If all the citizens of this earth were peacable, there would be less P-L-M.

I am starting to get a little frustrated with the recycling system in PG. Last weekend I wanted to take my recycling and some paint cans in, so I went to the Nechako Bottle Depot. I thought I'd be able to get rid of all my recycling and my paint cans at the same place. When I got there, there were two recycling bins. One was for cardboard only and one was for milk jugs. I don't separate my cardboard from the rest of the paper, so I couldn't use that bin, and the milk jug bin was completely full with a big pile of jugs piled around it, so I couldn't use that. So I tried to turn in my paint cans, but there was nobody at that window, and nobody answered when I rang the buzzer. What a waste of time. It's not the first time that I've not been able to take my recycling in because of full bins.

This city needs a curbside recycling program. And, yes, I know. I can pay for a private company to come and get it, but I'm just too cheap. I also think they might not pick up all the stuff I recycle anyway (paper, milk jugs, glass jars, tin cans).
Here's another rant on drivers. Please do not stop at Queensway and Second Ave. unless you are travelling west on Second. This is not a three way stop now. There is only one stop sign. That is on Second ave. I don't know how many people have stopped going both ways on Queensway because they don't bother to watch the street signs. They just assume that because the light is being removed that it should be a three way. All this does is slow down traffic.
Metalman, the latest threat I've heard of is the space Katrina. A charged storm from the sun that shorts out all electrical grids (and things connected to them) on earth and all the satellites in orbit. NASA said this week such a storm would make all electronic devices broken and the US military would be blinded with most weapons being rendered useless. These storms can last hours, days, or years and they happen every few hundred years on a global cataclysmic scale the scientists say. Apparently we would only have a few minutes warning before complete darkness of all technology. They suspect we are due for a storm of this sort and it would cause chaos the after effect....
Randy 1955, I must agree with you about tired of being taxed through the teeth, however I disagree with you about the mismanagement of money. I believe the real money mismangement is done by the city, not the corporations as you state.
JARDOL
We have happily used the total recycling program that the City and private business provides for over a decade with no problems. Wether it be paint, tires, batteries, cardboard, paper, tin cans or glass. There is even a recycling place to drop off computors, etc
Yes, it requires a bit of driving as it is not in one location, but i like the diversity of being able to drop stuff off on the way to work or if I am in another area of town.
Happy New Year
"It looks like we have a holier than thou opinionator here; Chris, using your carbon tax rebate to buy bike parts does not make you a hero, sorry. "

I respectfully disagree. Especially in PG where the lack of a great public transit system and the general sprawl make it very difficult to reduce your carbon footprint.

It always amazes me when people deny reality. As a fishermen my favorite is the 60 year old guy that shows me pictures of 20 steelhead he killed in one day and then says "its just not like it used to be." Well no sh*t. You killed the damn fish as fast as you could. The funny thing is that the guy never sees the link between his behaviour and the result. He just think the fish wandered off!

We dont have to look far to see the impact we are having on the enviroment. The wind storms that we have had for the last 5 years or so. The warm and erratic winters. 2 feet of snow last year in May (maybe even early June, I dont remember). The near collapse of the pacific salmon. The nearly complete extinction of the Nechako sturgeon. The same for the Nechako salmon.

I fear that the earth is already terminal. We really didnt know any better. One thing I guarantee is that it wont be gone in 2 years. Short of nuclear or biological war the dying earth will be THE topic for the rest of our lives.
How about those that get in their autos with 3 feet of snow on it turn on the wipers and just go.
YOU are supposed to be able to see in all directions, not just out the front DUH!!!
I believe the fine for driving with excess snow is $120.oo.See it all the time around here.
Metalman. Good post about the golbal panic. When people were dumping stocks i was stock piling at at discount and its paying off. -Going green is just the flavor of the day. Does anyone know how much copper and rare earth elements are in hybrid cars? Its alot. I will let you guys do the research and put it all in perspective you arent saving the environment like you think you are. It takes alot more carbon emission and resources to get these two elements out of the ground so we can get the good sensation that we are doing something just to mask the fear that the flavor of the day provides.
Re: Gas prices
You are not powerless when it comes to the gas price gouge. While you have to buy gas to keep the vehicle rolling, you don't have to buy all the extras from them.

Buy your oil, washer fluid, wiper blades, food items, coffee, smokes etc.. from someplace that doesn't sell gas. A little extra planning will save you money.

If you take the high-profit convenience items out of their business plan, they will have to compete against each other and offer lower gas prices to attract your business.
Runner46,

It is good that the city has a recycling program, but I wouldn't say that there are "no problems". When I load up my van with all my recycling for the last month or two, drive to the recycling depot, then have to drive to another depot because the bins are full, that is a problem.

I think almost every other city our size or bigger in BC has a curbside recycling program. It's about time we got one, too.
"How about those that get in their autos with 3 feet of snow on it turn on the wipers and just go"
It was more like one foot and hey, I was in a hurry!
I rode a bike for years before I got a license. I knew and followed the rules of the road. It’s not rocket science; it’s just a few boneheads out there who refuse to abide by the rules.

Get out of your car and go inside if the drive through is taking too long. It’s not for coffee drinkers only – everyone is entitled to use it. If the lineup is long, I never sit in the drive through, I go in, and 9 times out of 10 I’m out of there while the same cars are still sitting there waiting and becoming increasingly agitated. Add a cup of coffee to the mix and you have one angry, high strung, impatient driver on the road.

As far as driving conditions – why is it that everyone is in such a hurry? I drive the speed limit, sometimes a bit over, and people insist on dangerously passing me in these narrow streets, almost side swiping me. Not only is it dangerous, but it scares the hell out of me. If you want to go and kill yourself, go right ahead, but I’d like to get home to my family in one piece, thank you very much, so BACK OFF!

Why do joggers jog on the street when the sidewalk is perfectly clear? And to add to this, why do joggers insist on jogging side by side, 3 or 4 wide on the street? At the very least, run in single file, especially with the narrow slippery streets. Even in the summer, joggers run on the road and I’d like to know why. I’m sure there must be a reason, so please, someone, enlighten me.

I’d love to know how Terasen managed to increase my gas bill after apparently reading the meter recently, when my meter is snowed in and no one can get to it without trudging through the snow. No tracks. They must be bionic.

As sick as I am of shoveling, I’m glad to see that the local ski hills have fantastic conditions! I plan on making the best of it and take full advantage of the huge amount of snow.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone. Slow down, be safe.

Thunder, let me help you try anf figure out you questions.
"As far as driving conditions – why is it that everyone is in such a hurry?"- because in PG everyone thinks they are in a rally race and feel they must pass everyone yhat is on the road.

"Why do joggers jog on the street when the sidewalk is perfectly clear?" Because they are special and they are "in shape' and want everyone to take note.

Terrason probably guessed at you consumption using last years stats. It will get corrected when they get a chance to actually read your meter.
My gas bill increased 3 times over a 6 month period and I was told that they had just read my meter. I said no way. They didn't have an answer for me. I'm fine with the estimations and the eventual adjustments, but outright BS pisses me off.
I’m going north on Ospika in the outside lane the other day when I catch up to this rig it’s a sleigh. He is wearing a red coat with this peaked hat that has a tassel on the end. And you wont believe this but its being pulled by eight tiny reign deers. He’s on the Cell phone making a left turn at Ospika and 15th. He’s on the center line using both turn slots. People are flashing their lights and blowing their horns.

He cut off the guy behind him making a right turn into Timmy’s. The guy is blowing his horn and shaking his fist but the old guy just keeps on trucking. He’s at the order board still on his phone. The person at the desk doesn’t know if they are being talked to or what’s happening. When he gets to the takeout window the old girl almost hawks up her faults teeth. She hands him his donut and coffee that was finally ordered. He gives her twenty bucks and says keep the change. He mutters something about these Prince George drivers are the mos t stupid in the world all they ever do is whine about my driving habits.

He tweaks his nose and he’s off towards the horse in the sky. He is last seen in the Casino Hotel parking lot with a fist full of money heading for the entrance.
Joggers and bicyclists are so wrapped up in their own little world that they think of no one but themselves. They are saving the world so they are better.
blackbox, that is the best logic I have heard in ages!
Red2b: "Why do joggers jog on the street when the sidewalk is perfectly clear?"

Because the sidewalks are usually so badly slanted (not level) towards the curb that one ends up in the street anyways or suffers sore ankles.

Why do people walk in the street even though there is a sidewalk?

Because it has snow three feet deep on it and it won't be cleared until the sun melts it away.

Welcome to Participaction Canada!
Speaking of Terasen gas my annual bill is 2,460.00. Today I received $25.00 from the Provincial Government as a BC Climate Action Tax Credit for low income. Now, that it is not going to help very much.

I am wondering if there shouldn't be more relief for those that live in the Northern parts of the Province. Or better yet, Tersen gas would lower it' price.

What do you think?
lol..yes Diplomat. The only beef I have about the snow on sidewalks is in the morning when kids are waiting for their buses to come. They need to stand as close to the snowbank as they can. Only one out of every five drivers slow down enough. (my own mental note)

As for walking on sidewalks just do what I do....go in one direction then turn around and go back the way you came...balances out those legs perfectly!

:)
Slanted sidewalks about the dumbest thing the city has done. They say its an engineering standard, well what standard. I have been in cities all over the world and this is the only place I have seen slanted sidewalks. Why do you see people in wheelchairs on the road, just try using a wheelchair on those goofy sidewalks.
Here is a good one. Seismic activity under Yellowstone park has been increasing. That is a super volcano and if it blows we won't have to be worrying about global warming. He HE.
I agree that Terason gas should lower there rate my bill last month was 465.00 just for one month.
What is happening at the Cameron Street Bridge! OK, so it is made public that this will run longer in time than originally said. But does that mean that the contractor does not have to work at all. We are so stupid as tax payers to sit back and watch this. Ben, is there anything we can do? I still can't believe that the same crew is now working on some kind of flood control on river road, what are we thinking? how do we get ourselves into these situations, do we really think that this job will be done on time and on budget?
They are working on the Cameron Street Bridge.

really, is it on night shift because i sure dont see any progress.
Why is the new RCMP building being built using construction management? What was wrong with the way buildings like this have been built in the past (lump sum)?
The only ones who gain from construction management is the general contractor. The owner will pay for every little delay or the sub contracter will get blamed (and screwed)
It seems that using the "point system" for this project allows the city to pick whatever contractor they want. Maybe they want to teach the local contractors a lesson so they arrange for an out of town contractor to score the best on the RFP. I wonder if all local trades will be given a fair opportunity or if it will be like Duchess Park where the trades were all predetermined going in and no one else was even given the opportunity to provide pricing. Time will tell. What does Dominion Fairmile contribute to PG when compared to Wayne Watson, IDL or WIC. Why not keep it local?
it does not seem as though our local guys can do anything on time or even close to budget, so maybe it is better to have someone come in and show them how it is done.
Hello everyone I think it is time to think of a new name for the Cameron street bridge. My suggestion is "The Red-Nose Express" think about it and have a good day.
I have noticed lately a very reliable way to forecast bad weather. Seems just about anytime we have bad weather moving in, the weather radar on Baldy Hughes fails.
http://finance.sympatico.msn.ca/investing/news/businessnews/article.aspx?cp-documentid=16699583

I posted the link above for an interesting story that says the price of oil has dropped below $40 per barrel, despite the rising price of fuel. Looks like proof of gouging to me. Perhaps there is a reasonable explanation though...
Common Sense said "it does not seem as though our local guys can do anything on time or even close to budget"
What projects have been built on time by out of town contractors? I know of lots that haven't and most end up with legal problems. Multi Plex, Courthouse, The Brick etc., College Hts Plaza, Courthouse, UNBC Teaching and Learning, Barton Building, Aquatic Centre, Art Gallery, Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Walmart and the list goes on. Most, if not all, of these jobs went over the original schedule and budget. A lot of the time poor design is more of a reason than the general contractor. The Gateway project being built by a local contractor is ahead of schedule and below budget as was the Gaming Centre.
Common Sense, what jobs do you know of that have been over budget and delayed as a result of a poor local contractor? Reasons could be weather, design, soil conditions etc..
Yes Dan the simple explanation is this the price of crude on Dec.23 was around 36/barrel and rose on Jan 5 to $49+/barrel.The price jump is based on that increase, now that it has pulled back again I would suspect fuel prices will drop accordingly. Keep in mind the 15% increase at the pump occured after a 35% increase in crude
Right on RED2B! Commonsense; gain some understanding please. BORN in BC; You are probably right, Chris on a bike must be a hero to someone, but I disagree with you conclusions about how man must be affecting the weather. The earth has always cycled through warmer and colder times, what we do has very little effect on the weather. The weather is not to blame for diminishing pacific salmon, that is mainly the fault of man, I mean indians AND palefaces alike; over fishing, clear cut logging, damming and diversion of streams and rivers, poor resource management altogether. Why don't we have very many sturgeon anymore? Well many years ago, there was a massive landslide in the Fraser canyon that actually blocked the Fraser River for a while. This prevented that years' or the following years' sturgeon spawning run. This actually led to two different but related species, those above the Fraser canyon, and those below. The ones at this end also have to deal with lower water levels and higher water temperatures thanks to the Kenney Dam. That has not helped the Sturgeon to survive and prosper. The same Nechako conditions have affected the salmon. It is not the weather it is our actions and piss poor management.

RE Snow on the roof of your car. Last week Mud River Hill going west got hit by a huge slab of Snow coming of a Van , hitting my Windshield with very loud bang, I was lucky it did not cave in. To the lazy Bum in the Van you should loose your Permit to drive anything, but what good are fines if you don't enforce the Rules.
Terasen = Mob.
Outwest, quit driving so close. I keep several car lengths between me & the car infront of me. Tailgating is dangerous, especially in the winter with our road conditions.
There was a time in Prince George when local trades were used. What a pity that it is not stipulated in today's specifications.

Come on now, how about some feedback on Northerner's geting help on their gas bills?

People in the lower mainland pay much less for heating than we Northerner's.
mythoughts: before you voice your Opinion again here are the Facts, I was going west he was going east, so I was hitting this flying Slab of Snow and Ice at 100kph plus whatever he was doing.
As far as Terasen goes, go with equal monthly payments and you will at least space your payments out over the course of a year and not be faced with huge bills in the winter.

Also to Lamb, I'm not sure what kind of house you live in where you pay $2,460 per year in gas and are still eligible for a government low income $25 rebate -- this does not compute somehow. I pay a little over half that in gas for a year and live in a modest house. I'm certainly not eligible for any kind of government carbon tax rebate.

There ya go mythoughts, assuming things again.
Where do you read in Outwest's post that says he was tailgating?
Re Terasen - I supposedly do have the equal payment plan, or so I'm told. They "adjust" it once a year in the past. This time, over 6 months, they have "adjusted" it.

Just sayin... take a close look at your bills and call in any discrepancies. They screw up sometimes and most people don't even question it.
Should have read: this time, over 6 months, they have "adjusted" it 3 times.
Okay... this "snow slab" thing bothers me... if OW was going west at 100kph and the slab was coming of the vehicle going east at the moment of impact... would not OW have hit the slab at less than 100kph ??

After all, the slab would have also been travelling west ... since it came off the vehicle as it yielded to the pressure of the eastbound energy... and furthermore, the slab would have been momentarily in westbound flight. :-)

I should think that outwest is very fortunate that the windshield did not bust, and some folks would panic and lose control of the vehicle, good on ya
out west!
Everybody: try to have a good week end eh?
metalman.
Outwest & Lostfaith...I'm not assuming anything. It's a fact, if he wasn't so close, he wouldn't have been hit. If you have ever taken a defensive driving course, you would have learned to keep a car length back for every 10km of speed so he should have been 10 car lengths back. In poor conditions, that distance should be increased. I rest my case, he was too close.
One of many things that irk me somewhat is how retailers here (and most likely elsewhere) sell paint. I even sent an e-mail to "Olsen on your side" about it a year or two ago. It concerns the price of paint. For example, at Home Depot, (or General Paint or Cloverdale Paint) you buy a four litre can of paint for $30 dollars. yet when you purchase a one litre can of the same paint it costs about $15 dollars. Do the math. Four single one litre cans cost twice as much ($60) as one four litre can. By adding in the cost of an empty one litre can container, I cannot for the life of me see the correlation. Next time you go to Home Depot and ya got some time to kill, do the math and ask. I did. The answer was that it is "just the way it works".
Mythoughts stated ".....you would have learned to keep a car length back for every 10km of speed so he should have been 10 car lengths back.."
How do you stay 10 car lengths back from an east bound car when you are travelling west??
RRrabbitt- Not quite. If the vehicle is heading east and snow falls off the roof it would still be headed east in relation to any given reference point on the ground. For it to fall off the vehicle, it doesn't need to change direction from east to west, only decelerate in relation to the vehicle it was on top of.

Harbinger- Why does this surprise you? Two 500mL bottles of cola cost much more than one 2L bottle does. How is paint any different?
MrPg you are right, this doesnt compute and how does it happen? As you say -
"Also to Lamb, I'm not sure what kind of house you live in where you pay $2,460 per year in gas and are still eligible for a government low income $25 rebate -- this does not compute somehow. You have a higher income than I do. My house is 75% glass and I don't have a choice as to where I live and still be self respecting and independent. There is a whole story here and I couldn't share it in shallow back and forths but it is worth taking into account.
Why not just help out Northerner's so they can stay in their homes? Especially the aged who don't really have choices and don't want to be a drag on society. They have contributed and sometimes the only thing they have left is self-respect and not really wanting society to support them.

Haven't you read the above posts?

Smoke another one Sheesh!
On a final note on this forum and it is probably beyond the depth of this forum BUT they keep talking about job losses and in this society if you don't have a job you are less than those that do have a job.

My wonder is - it is becoming obvious that eveypne is not going to be able to have a job so I would like to pick your brains as to how we can build a society where when there is not enough jobs for everyone how can we make everyone feel included and that is without being on welfare. How can we do that? Maybe we can't. But being on the dole when society cannot provide jobs for everyone is not fair. Any ideas?
Harbinger
If you paid the asking price of the paint you wanted, (assuming you bought some)then thats why the price of the paint is what it is. LMAO
Hey joggers, if you have to jog in the middle of my lane instead of the sidewalk forcing me to cross over to the other side. Maybe it's time you took a break from running for awhile.
Our premier did us no favours by capping our assessments at 2007 levels. Our ecomony was roaring then. 2008 was no picnic for homeowners or workers. All our homes lost value. The mil rate will be interesting this year.
No more bailing out the symphony orchestra! I'm still angry about that one.
Hopefully we have a better mayor and council at the helm.
Oh ya, reading is a skill and some don't have it!
"You have a higher income than I do. My house is 75% glass and I don't have a choice as to where I live and still be self respecting and independent. There is a whole story here and I couldn't share it in shallow back and forths but it is worth taking into account."

Everyone has a choice. If the cost of living in my house was crippling me financially I would be looking at other options, a smaller more energy efficient house, etc.

To MrPG not everyone has a choice, if you are a certain age you can not get a morgage so you stay. Years ago a rich business man who was wrecking our neighbourhood told us all to move, but who would buy our houses. I live in the house I raised my family and yes it is bigger than I need but I have good neighbourhood support and I live where I don't need a car to get to places so I stay even though my Terasen Gas bill is high.
Lamb, last week you were wondering if women ever got to run a society, and this week you were wondering about a society that takes care of everyone....

It made me think you might be interested in researching the Roman Vestal Virgins. They were basically the heart behind the Roman Empire from early kingdom 500BC, through republic, through to the end of the Empire itself.

These were a cult of female priests that were picked from a young age of 6-10 and committed to 30 years service to the state during which time they had to remain virgins under punishment of burial alive if they violated their oath.

In ancient Rome land ownership was power... and women owned the majority of land. Its the only major ancient society where women had so much power and official land ownership rights like that (even if no vote). A lot of the power of the women in Roman society derived from the Vestal Virgins... and in fact they were the most powerful people in Rome.. akin to the billionaires of today, and acted as the moderator of Romes policy ensuring food for the people and good advice for lawmakers ect...

So the Vestal Virgins were tasked with keeping all state secrets that needed to be stored and transmitted at a latter date, also important legal document, and the wills of the rich patricians including the likes of Ceaser and Augustus... the two most important wills in Roman history. So this cult of women had great power because they held all the knowledge of the Roman government and all the almost banking like duties for the Roman people. The idea was they were able to be trusted more than any man ever could be and as a result they had great access to power and were able to use that power to shape society. They lost power to what we would recognize today as bankers in about the 4th century this side of Jesus, but prior to that for a thousand years through all sorts of calamities they were at the heart of Rome and Roman policies moderating the excess of Romans great conquerers and providing a continuity that even surpassed that of the Senate.

Just thought that would be in an interesting read for you relating to some history on the subject. Cheers
