Ice Maker Fed Up Over Oval

Prince George, B.C.-    He is the volunteer who has looked after the flooding of the ice oval for nearly a decade but Dick Voneugen has  thrown his hands up in the air, saying enough is enough. “By far it is the public skaters and the hockey players who are the majority of users of the ice oval. The incident last year lost us some people, we lost some families.”
That incident last year, saw a confrontation between a speedskater  and three youngsters playing hockey on the oval and then there was a  collision.
The ice oval hasn’t opened this year, as the Ice Oval Society tries to look at developing a policy assess risk management, and develop a  schedule to handle the mixed use groups and avoid conflict.  Voneugen says this time of the year is not the time to be discussing risk management or access.
“In my opinion, we’re losing site of what we’re trying to do which is include the maximum number of hours people can go skating. If we are going to limit that to 4 hours in the evening, then we are limiting access to the majority of people who use the oval. Moms and their kids, ah daycare schools came here, school classes from high schools, they all came here, over 20 thousand visits.”
The ice oval this year does not have a hockey rink in the centre, but the hours of access are under discussion, “We originally had it opened from 7 – 11 like a city park.   I would like to see something simple, not a calendar, so when the weather is good you can just say, hey lets go skate.”
Voneugen has resigned his position with the Ice Oval.  “We had a great start and the potential is still there to make this work.”

I find it fully that I heard this on meisner show at around 9:15am and the post says posted on 8:30am. Is the clock on opinion 250 an hour late?
A big thank you to Mr. Voneugen for his years of service to the people of Prince George and area. Volunteers like Mr. Voneugen are what makes this a great community!
The others that have created this fiasco are the exact opposite!
The words "wayward gravel" gonna be forgotten in all future references to this ice oval? Jest wunderin'.
Nice work Mr.Voneugen. Thanks for many years of ice.
I'm not impressed with the IOS group, who have taken what might be a nice public facility and made it into a bureaucratic nightmare causing good people to quit.

Disband the IOS and get some people in there who can get this facility open to the public now!

Put your name forward MrPG...I'm sure they'd love some help.
why not open it all day as weather permits and have the comittee look after the ice? I'm sure a fund raiser to "save the oval" would pay for any upkeep, I mean we're talking about freezing water in the wintertime, its not rocket science. If the committee wants to assign somone or ask for volunteers to ensure people play by the rules it shouldn't be too hard. Do the schools still offer community programs for their students, where they put in so much community time for course credits? A couple of 16 year olds armed with cell phones should be able to keep track of safe skating techniques I would think.

Just a thought.
I'm sure they could use some help, considering they are losing all of their good people due to the ridiculousness of this whole mess. Pretty soon there won't be anyone left.
Hockey players have more than enough other places to play hockey....so why not leave this open for the rest of the skaters...no other skaters...hockey ok, but they shut down when other arrive....this sounds fair to me....
Death to Hockey! Death to Tim Hortons!
I agree BCRacer. Hockey players have more than enough places to play hockey. Bit I don't think they should be accomadated when there are no other skaters around because dollars to doughnuts they will not shut it down when the skaters arrive.
In all my life I don't can't remember a time when I or my children have been able to enjoy a nice outdoor skate without some hockey hooligans ruining it. Unless you are playing hockey no one enjoys dodging raised slapshots and behind knocked on your behind by over zealous and brainless hockey players. The two can't share ice in harmony or in the name of safety, so why
try?
Where are all these places to play hockey?Hockey players are the biggest users of the oval.I have never seen a slap shot go near any skater. The hockey players are not wearing padding so the shots are low and slow.Ask a speed skater how they stop with those type of skates and they will tell you to stay out of their way because they can't stop.
I agree that the obvious solution is to make this a skating oval. No hockey.

If that were to happen, would everything else click back into place? I am not involved, so am just wondering if there is not something else which is festerng here as well.
I only skated at the oval a few times. WHile there were hockey players in the center they caused no problems. The speed skaters on the other hand just about ran my kids over several times. Maybe had i not been there they would have knocked them down like the guy did last winter. The fact is that if speed skaters need ice time they shoul have scheduled times, even if they take up most of the time available. I stopped using the oval because the speed skaters were obv. pissed off and no one wants to skate hwere they are not wanted.
"Ask a speed skater how they stop with those type of skates and they will tell you to stay out of their way because they can't stop."

So is this something like asking a hockey player how to stop a puck that has been sent off in a direction you thought it was going to go, but it doesn't? Does the hockey player yell "FORE"? LOL
I have been an admirer of Mr. Voneugen and his volunteerism for many years. He is truly interested in the health of people and has given so much to us as a community.
Thank you Sir.
Speedskaters and I think we have a promising dedicated young skater in Prince George probably need their own time.
Hockey, well my Dad built my brother and he a rink in the l930's and they had a lot of fun so did the other kids.
Family skating, what fun.
Big problem to accommodate all, I think no.
Just ask Mr. Voneugen he probably has an answer.
Seems most people have missed the point on what is happening here. Gus is right when he suggests that something else is festering. Once they had the incident last year, and they started looking into the situation, guess what??

The City came to the conclusion that they owned the property, and even though it was being run by the IOS, the City could and probably would be liable if there were any injuries etc; Hence referring the matter to the ***Risk Management People**

If you want to ensure that a good functioning project is doomed to failure, have it run by the City, and have the **Risk Management** people involved.

I suspect that if this situation is resolved, the City will have some say in how it is run, and will probably hire some staff to run it, and they will ensure that they have sufficient insurance to cover their proverbial asses, and that there will be a user charge, so that they can collect some money to cover the cost of the project. Any bets??

A simple solution to the original problem would be to set up a skating rink at the old Ice Oval Location for people to play hockey, the same volunteers could keep both places functional, however now that **Risk Management** has raised its ugly head its not likely that that will happen.
You know things are rotten when Dick throws in the towel.

I didin't think the word quit was in his vocabulary
