PRINCE GEORGE - The Province and 2010 Legacies Now are providing $15,000 in funding to support Prince George in hosting the Road to the Roar Curling Championship, taking place November 10-15.

Hosting BC is a partnership between the Province of B.C., 2010 Legacies Now and Tourism BC, whose primary goal is to attract national and international level sport events to B.C. communities and establish B.C. as a world leader in event hosting.

It provides grants to support provincially-based organizations as they bid for, secure, and host sport events in B.C. communities. This round of grants supports 26 summer and winter sports including biathlon, freestyle skiing, curling, cycling, para cross-country skiing and
wheelchair basketball.

The Canadian Curling trial qualifier event, which takes place at Prince George Golf and Curling Club, will see more than 140 men and women compete. From this event four men's and four women's teams will advance to the next level event - Roar of the Rings in Edmonton, December 6-13, which determines Canada's Olympic representatives in 2010.

"Hosting the Road to the Roar curling event in November will enable Prince George and its neighbouring communities to participate actively in the 2010 Olympic selection process," said Art Robin, Director Finance, Road to the Roar Committee. "Hosting BC's grant to the Host
Committee is an important cornerstone to the public and private support required to hold such an event and build a financial legacy aimed at supporting the sport of curling in Northern B.C. The economic impact of the event is estimated at $2.7 million for British Columbia."
