Health Minister Responds To Delay For X Ray For Elderly Woman

Prince George - The following statement has been issued by Health Minister George Abbott in relation to the case of Mrs Sarah Smith, a patient at Simon Fraser Lodge, receiving an X-Ray for a broken leg in Prince George. The family says 84 year old Sarah waited seven days for an X-ray.

My sympathies go out to Ms. Smith’s family.  Losing a loved one is difficult, especially so close to the holiday season.

Prince George Regional Hospital received an x-ray request for Ms. Smith on December 29, 2008.  She was booked for, and received, the x-ray on the following day.  If the request had been booked earlier, it would have been performed earlier.

We’ve confirmed that there were no delays for procedures that week.

It is the responsibility of the physician to advise patients of the medical necessity of their conditions.  If the family has concerns regarding the actions of the physician, I would encourage them to contact the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

The Northern Health Authority has informed me that they have a process in place to review this case to ensure that the facility acted appropriately to Ms. Smith’s injury.

...goes right back to my original comments on the how these facilities tend to our elderly.

The question now is, was it the doctor that didn't do the job or the Simon Fraser staff?
Now we will see the blame game!
Isnt that what people want: blame? I mean really, what do most posts on 250 come down to these days? Or for that matter, what do most people home in on in response to any story of tragedy or inequity? We are a blood thirsty lot when it comes to other folks mistakes thats for sure.
From Meisner's column;

"The question being raised by Diane Cailleaux of Prince George as to why it took seven days for her mother to receive an X-Ray for a broken femur bone is not only a legitimate question, it demands an answer."

So who is telling the truth and who is not? Which side of the story are we not getting?
It is interesting that the Health Minister responded rather than the Administrator of PGRH or the CEO of the Northern Health Authority. Why?

Good question ammonra.
I was wondering the same thing.
Too many unanswered question here that nobody seems to want to address?

You got that right and if people keep looking for blood everytime some freakin idiot causes a death or abandons his horses or what have, then one day perhaps this planet may be a safe place for those of us that "CARE"

Getting rid of careless people should be a priority!
Good idea lostfaith, and if we can ever apply it to accountability for politicians,it will be a great day indeed!
The Ministry is quoted as stating: "It is the responsibility of the physician to advise patients of the medical necessity of their conditions. If the family has concerns regarding the actions of the physician, I would encourage them to contact the College of Physicians and Surgeons."

The Ministry is silent on what the family is to do if they have concerns about the action of the Simon Fraser Lodge. I am not too sure of its exact status withing the health care system, but assume it is a long term care facility with some level of quality control, at the least, beeing exercised by the Ministry through the local health authority.

As far as laying blame. I think we should focus on learning from an experience and ensuring the likelihood of a repeat is minimal. Od course, if no one accepts blame, partial or full, including the family, then we will just call it an act of God and blame Her.
Why didn't the Minister of Health do some investigating and find out why the system failed. That would be his job, to see how our health system is operating. But not this guy, he just sluffs it off and says that they should ask the doctor or the hospital or... anybody but not me. Time for him to go.
Astro, did you bother to read the statement from the Minister?

"Prince George Regional Hospital received an x-ray request for Ms. Smith on December 29, 2008. She was booked for, and received, the x-ray on the following day. If the request had been booked earlier, it would have been performed earlier."

What about this indicates that the system failed?
Big sigh - nothing changes.
It doesn't take away her pain or bring her back.
Time for change?
Yes we can.
(if we want to)
Mr. PG if you read the 1st article, you might remember this, "Tuesday, January 20, 2009 04:11 AM

Prince George, B.C. - The daughter of a woman who waited for seven days before receiving an X-Ray for a broken leg says she has not yet heard from the Northern Health Authority, Simon Fraser Lodge, or the Doctor involved in the matter.

84 year old Sarah Smith ( shown in photo at right) was a patient at the Simon Fraser Lodge. Her femur bone was broken on December 23rd of 2008. The following day a Doctor ordered an X-Ray but that did not take place until Dec 30th. The leg was set on December 31st."

Lets hear what the physician has to say for him/her self.
Oh please lostfaith, surely even you can see the problem with your arguement. You persecute people for every little mistake, not because you care, but because you think, in your 20:20 hindsite that only stupid/uncaring people make mistakes. The reality is that there are folks out there who likely think you are negligent/stupid/uncaring either because you are, or because you dont follow their way of thinking. I think you will CARE a lot when they persecute you. There is nothing worse than righteous drivel born from hindsite.
I do care, by the way. I suspect i have done more to save animals in danger than you have. I also care about treatment of the elderly. I just dont believe in attacking people, smearing whole groups of people or calling for peoples blood at the first sign that there may have been an error (even a preventable one) made.
As usual, you miss my main point. You dont KNOW the facts of this case, and you dont really care what they are. Why not wait for the act before shooting off your mouth.
Getting rid of the self righteous should be a priority!
The doctor may have written the order for an x-ray on the 23 but I suspect the doctors office and his secretary was off and closed untill the folowing tuesday with x-mas eve on the wed...day on thursday boxing day friday and of course the weekend making the 29th monday and the 30th a tuesday .. the day she got in ... I would bet that the doc seen her on the 23rd late afternoon or early eve. ... and the secreatary never booked the x-ray untill she got back from xmas time off.

Coupled with the fact that SFL is a not staffed by Northern Health employees but by contractors(Stirling Health and the YMCA) its obvious that somewhere something fell apart.. My personal gut instinct is that it was a hoopla with the doctors office as its the offices responsilbility to refer one to the proper place ...then its up to the place (this case the X-ray) to schedule an appoint and contact the patient
opps .. make that closed untill monday the 29th
