Prince George, B.C. - Prince George City Council will begin budget deliberations this afternoon.

The City says 3.4% tax increase of just over $2.27 million and approximately $700,000 in new construction revenue is what it will take to maintain existing service levels and provide funding for contractual commitments.  That number doesn't include a number of proposed service enhancements that could total as much as $860,407

After a budget overview, Administrative Services will present to City Council this evening, which includes things like fire and police protection, emergency measures, and bylaw enforcement.  There are two service enhancement requests that councilors will have to consider.  The first is four new Firefighter and four new Officer positions to achieve permanent staffing of PG Fire Rescue's Ladder Truck 24/7.  The cost for 2009 is $235,587 and by 2010, $555,280.  The second request is for a full-time Emergency Coordinator with a cost of $56,165 in 2009 and $85,745 in 2010.

The next budget meeting is set for February 9th with Community Services scheduled to present to City Council.

Budget deliberations are scheduled to run until February 23rd.

Comments

Rather than comment in this forum, about what I think is good or bad about this budget, I will go to the council meeting and when asked for comments from the general public, I will stand up and make my views known.

That way my words won't fall on deaf ears, that way they do here.

Nobody seems to listen to me here.

My shirt is getting a bit damp over my heart and my eyes are misting up. I can't type anymo.......
Tap tap tap... is this thing on?
Go for it Beesknees, don't embarass us fellow bloggers.

No increase budget. All city workers takes one unpaid day off every month. Except for street crews that has to take off two days off between May to October so that they are on full shift for the snow removal. This should help the budget.

NO MORE TAX INCREASES. The whole world is tightening it's belt and PG wants to raise taxes. Who do they think they are? We have to learn to live within our means. Get rid of some of the luxury items and concentrate on what we really need.
Funny how the federal and provincail governments think that they needed to help out and our illustrious new council is taking it. Guess they need the money so they can build their new arts centre and trails.

I would have gladly taken 3.4% increase each of the past two years as opposed to the 14% and 18% that I was stuck with
