Cougar Complaints Down
By 250 News
Prince George, B.C. - The Prince George Conservation Officer Service says complaints about Cougars and sightings of the big cats in the area are down this season compared to last year. CO Gary Van Spengen says the weather may be a factor in the reduction.
"Cougars will probably be going more towards their natural prey because they're able to pad upon the snow because of our freeze-thaw, as compared to last year where we kind of had the bottomless pit of snow."
While there have been fewer complaints, Van Spengen says a homeowner did have to destroy a cougar when it attacked the family dog.
"This is an unfortunate incident and very rare. Under the Wildlife Act, if a person has to destroy wildlife for imminent protection of themselves or property, we would still do an investigation, but the chances of someone being charged under the Wildlife Act would be low if the circumstances were correct."
The Conservation Officer Service says bringing pets in at night, feeding them indoors, and monitoring livestock can help prevent the chances of a cougar attack.
