Prince George B.C. – Once you are into the business of producing wood pellets, you are no longer in the forest industry you are now in the Energy business. That’s the message Michael Kerr delivered to Prince George City Council.
Pellets are sold not based on weight, but on the level of energy they produce says Kerr, “There has been no slowdown in the bioenergy business in the past 13 years” He adds that bioenergy employs 300 to 500 people in the region either directly or indirectly. “Prince George is known as the home of wood and bioenergy” Kerr told Council as he made a pitch for a financial contribution from the City.
The next Bioenergy conference is set for 2010. Kerr says there were 420 delegates last time around, and 600 are expected in 2010. “That would increase the economic spin off by about $100 thousand dollars” says Councilor Sherri Green.
The last conference saw the City put in $12,000 but this time round, the request is for $15 thousand. Kerr says it is important to have a financial commitment now in order to get funding from other areas.
The conference is set for June of 2010.
Council will discuss the request at the budget discussions as a budget enhancement.

Seems like its time to return some of the profits they speak about. And with the amount of delegates coming here for this conference, let them pay their own way.
You don't see, for example, Ritchie Bros Auctions coming to the city, asking for help, because they're putting on an auction, and they want money to help some of the people who get here find hotel rooms, etc...
Is this bioenergy a real business, or is it just another government program sucking dollars out of my pocket?
