Mackenzie, B.C. – The chlorine dioxide leak at the Worthington-Mackenzie Pulp Mill has been contained, and residents of the industrial area being allowed back in their homes.
They had been ordered out of the area earlier today as a precaution as experts dealt with a weeping valve on a chlorine dioxide tank.
The township of Mackenzie was never in danger, and no one suffered any injury as a result of the leak which was originally discovered last week. At that time, the valve was sealed with fibreglass resin. The sealing didn’t hold and the valve began seeping again Saturday.
Access to the industrial area was restricted to emergency personnel only and the 30 or so residents in the area were told to leave their homes. Although a registration centre was established for those needing assistance, only one person registered for help in finding accommodation until the threat of danger had passed.
The long term plan is to remove the chemicals from the pulp mill, but that is long term says Mayor Stephanie Killam “That is not something that is going to happen today.”
