Prince George, B.C.- Construction in Prince George was   down last month compared to February of last year. The stats from the Development Services department indicate there were only 16 building permits issued last month compared to 36 in February of 2008.
The real difference is in values of building permits. In February 2008, the total value was $8.1 million, while last month, there may have been only 1/3 of the number of permits issued but the total value of those permits was $9.8 million thanks to an addition to Walmart valued at $9 million.  Walmart is adding a meat section to its  grocery operation.

Walmarts expansion into meats and produce will make Save On and the Stupidstore smarten up when it comes to their prices and selection. Not to mention their labor contracts. Stupidstore and Save On knew this was coming so they put it in the contract. Ask any employee. Before Costco opened up here in PG the shopping sucked. And that's an understatement.
I meant labOUR. I am not gonna be Americanized.
Dont know where your coming from Harbinger. I shopped at Overwaitea long before the arrival of Costco, or the Super Store, and will continue to do so. It would be a frosty Friday before I would do any grocery shopping at Wal Mart, or Super Store.

The fact that Save On has a number of stores in Prince George that seem to be doing quite well should be your first indication that there is a large number of people in this town who dont agree with you.

Before Costco opened up you used to have a Safeway, and a Woodwards, to shop at. These companies left town, or went broke.

All the stores, Costco, Walmart, Super Store, Save on, etc; pay S..T for wages, the same as Sears, Hudson Bay, and all other retail stores in this town. Not only that they restrict you to 20 hours a week or less to avoid paying any benefits.
Before Costco came to town, Overwaitea, Safeway, and Extra Foods closed at six PM. Costco came before Stupidstore. Costco got a pharmacy first. Then the other three followed suit. Notice when Staples opened up, Speedy Printers and Papyrus renovated? What a coincidence. London drugs opened up here and Shoppers drug Mart renovated and expanded. I remember. do you? The manager of the Bay told city council if Walmart was allowed into town, he would be papering up his windows and going out of business. I was there at city council when he told the mayor and councilors that it would happen. Competition keeps the price down and the quality up.
overwaitea is over priced and there fruit and vegetables are tasteless. I never shop there. There is much better produce and prices elsewhere.
Hey! What did I say? Read my last line. Sure am lucky a government monopoly doesn't supply my food.
