Prince George, B.C.- The Provincial Government has released more details on its alien species act.
This is the legislation that will prevent people from having tigers or chimps or a variety of animals, lizards and snakes as their pets. The legislation will allow such animals to be kept by accredited zoos, research or educational facilities as long as they apply for and are granted a special permit.
Anyone who currently has one of these animals will have to apply for and be granted a special permit.
If a person is found to have such an animal and no permnit, they could face a fine of up to $250 thousand dollars or two years in jail. The animal may be; removed (at the owners expense) sent to an accredited zoo at the owners expense, or if no zoo can be found, euthanized.
The legislation follows the death of a woman in the 100 Mile House area. In May of 2007, Tania Dumstrey-Soos was killed by a caged tiger on a residential property.
