Prince George, B.C.- The Regional District of Fraser Fort George has approved it’s budget for 2009.

The $37.2 million budget is up from the previous year's  spending plan of $35.5 million ( including municipal debt) and will  require tax increases and decreases in different areas depending on their budget requirements.

The bottom line means there will be different tax implications for different areas:

Prince George residents will be paying at least 4.39% more than had been paid last year for the Regional District portion of the bill.  This is to be added to the 3.48% increase on the municipal tax bill.

Here is how the budget would impact other areas under the Regional District umbrella:
  • Mackenzie tax decrease of 1.38%
  • McBride tax increase of 10.69%
  • Valemount tax decrease 3.88%
  • Electoral Area “A” tax increase of 8.01%
  • Electoral Area “C” tax increase of 5.76%
  • Electoral Area “D” tax decrease of 7.25%
  • Electoral Area “E” tax increase of 1.62%
  • Electoral Area “F” tax increase of .53%
  • Electoral Area “G” tax increase of 12.89%
  • Electoral Area “H” tax increase of 20.54%  (largely due to  utility construction)

The big ticket items for this year's budget are:

Item Total Budget P.G. Share
Solid Waste Management $7.1 million $1.1 million
9-1-1 Emergency Response $3.4 million $1.3 million
Administration $3.1 million $1.4 million
Heritage Conservation $1.4 million $0.9 million

....different tax implications...??? Your wallet has only two settings. Full or empty. So much for a word like "implication."
Where in hell are we going to get this money for this outragouse tax increase? Jobs are being lost for many like us, but the city employees get raises for no work done, leave it all alone until things get back to more or less normal. Try to get blood from a stone.
Where are the checks and balances in our system? We cannot go on, year after year, with increased taxes. It is time for elected leaders to take a stand and reduce the size and cost of all governments. We, the taxpayers, cannot afford the luxury of this continued incompetence. Remember, there is only one taxpayer to support these multiple levels of incompetent government. It is time for change. Does anyone remember the stand a majority of California taxpayers took when this situation faced them? They demanded a downsizing of government to reduce costs and they were successful. It is time for that kind of action here. Is anyone out there listening or do we still have a complacent majority?
"They demanded a downsizing of government to reduce costs and they were successful."

They were??

Why would anyone call this success?

Where is PG spending almost a million bucks on heritage conservation? Is that keeping the heritage roads and not fixing them? The ones with all the potholes?

The conservation part is keeping the time proven, or unproven method of patching. Its heritage. It is the way our 4 fathers used to do it.
This little Burg with a population of approx 75,000 people spends in excess of $100 Million per year. The fact of the matter is Prince George is rolling in money.

The problem is that the Mayor, Council, and City administration spend the money faster than they collect it. They get revenue from;

(1) Taxes
(2) Gambling Revenue
(3) Police ticketing
(4) Gas Tax rebates
(5) Terasen Gas
(6) Provincial, and Federal Grants, etc;

All they have been able to do so far, is to increase their budgets, and increase taxes. They are totally unable to make any decisions that would require some sense of intelligence. Trough feeders, one and all.

The new Mayor and Council were supposed to do something about this obscene spending, however to date they have done diddly squat.

In fact if they continue with the grandiose idea's of the Performing Arts Centre, the New :Police Station, the absurd co-generation plant downtown to heat Government buildings, etc we can expect to see additional spending of somewhere in the area of $75 Million dollars.

The actual price tag for the Cameron St., Bridge is not in yet, however you can bet that it will be somewhere in the area of $5 Million over the original cost estimates.

We may very well have to have a huge rally in front of City Hall to get their attention to get them to cut costs. It seems that is all they understand. GOVERMENT BY RALLYS.
Your right Palopu, things never change in this city do they!
Maybe the 900k is ear marked to fix up the strip clubs and crackhouses we are going to put on the heritage registry.
Stip clubs??? You mean performing arts in a heritage building performing an art form probably as old as mankind itself.

Now that is what I call dedication to the arts and his story. We'll make something out of this northern frontier town yet.

Can Can .....
A copy and paste from the earlier story.

Only thing that keeps rising every year TAXES, I sure wish I could get a cost of living increase once a year to cover the ever rising taxes. Taxes for what? Every roads in and around Pr Geo are in the poorest condition I can remember in my 39 years here, sorry I mean 35 as I recently spent four years in Kamlooops where roads are drivable all year around. But I'm back and not very impressed with what I have seen here with how our tax dollars have been spent the past year. Fix the damn roads, they are a disgrace and an embarassment!
Small city idiots trying to be big city big shots.
Administration 3.1 million dollars WTF!!!
