Prince George, B.C. – The Fraser Fort George Regional Hospital District Board has approved spending $4 million dollars for upgrades to Prince George Regional Hospital to set the stage for the development of the Northern Cancer centre.

A number of upgrades to PGRH had been identified as necessary to support the cancer centre including renovations to the lab, diagnostic imaging, pharmacy, plant infrastructure, and the addition of a six in-patient acute care beds. Costs for the upgrades are estimated at $10,000,000 and Northern Health requested the Hospital District share up to 40% of the costs to the limit of $4,000,000.

The Regional Hospital District approved the expenditure, and is confident it won’t have to raise taxes in the future to pay the bill “We have been putting money away each year” says Board chair Stephanie Killam “and since all the funds won’t be needed at once, we think we should be able to cover it without having to raise taxes.”

The previous Chair of the Board, Don Zurowski, had expressed concerns over the amount of renovations, he asked for assurances that all the requested work was in fact the responsibility of Northern Health and not something that should be covered by the B.C. Cancer Agency.

Current Chair, Stephanie Killam says those concerns have been addressed, and the Board is satisfied the renovations and upgrades are their responsibility.

The Northern Cancer Centre project will see a new 5,500 square meter cancer centre built adjacent to Prince George Regional Hospital (PGRH). Construction is targeted to start this year with completion in 2012.

Sick of hearing this story and nothing happens, an election is on it's way in.
more smoke and mirrors I sure hope not
How about we get some doctors and nurses to fill it up first.
" ....we think we should be able to cover it without having to raise taxes.”
Do they actually think that taxpayers actually believe that!!
"“We have been putting money away each year” says Board chair Stephanie Killam..."

Perhaps our city can take a hint and do the same thing (putting money away each year) rather than always react to the latest needs to be met with yet another increase in property taxes!

Good job, Ms. Killam!

This should have been IN Prince George a LONG LONG time ago.
There is a place in Port Hardy called Carrot Park. It was named that in honour of the years and years of promises of a safe highway to southern Vancouver Island. They named the park after finally getting the carrot dangled in front of then for so many years.
This place should be called the "Carrot Cancer Treatment Center of Northern BC". How many years has this been promised to northern BC now?
We are not second class citizens and these bums need to be tossed before Gord can open the games or this cancer center.
