Prince George, B.C. – The Fraser Fort George Regional Hospital District Board has approved spending $4 million dollars for upgrades to Prince George Regional Hospital to set the stage for the development of the Northern Cancer centre.
A number of upgrades to PGRH had been identified as necessary to support the cancer centre including renovations to the lab, diagnostic imaging, pharmacy, plant infrastructure, and the addition of a six in-patient acute care beds. Costs for the upgrades are estimated at $10,000,000 and Northern Health requested the Hospital District share up to 40% of the costs to the limit of $4,000,000.
The Regional Hospital District approved the expenditure, and is confident it won’t have to raise taxes in the future to pay the bill “We have been putting money away each year” says Board chair Stephanie Killam “and since all the funds won’t be needed at once, we think we should be able to cover it without having to raise taxes.”
The previous Chair of the Board, Don Zurowski, had expressed concerns over the amount of renovations, he asked for assurances that all the requested work was in fact the responsibility of Northern Health and not something that should be covered by the B.C. Cancer Agency.
Current Chair, Stephanie Killam says those concerns have been addressed, and the Board is satisfied the renovations and upgrades are their responsibility.
The Northern Cancer Centre project will see a new 5,500 square meter cancer centre built adjacent to Prince George Regional Hospital (PGRH). Construction is targeted to start this year with completion in 2012.
