Mackenzie, B.C. - Renovations to the Mackenzie and District Hospital and Health Centre will add four residential care beds for seniors who require around-the-clock nursing care.

“The District of Mackenzie has placed a high priority on seniors’ care and housing in its strategic planning process,” said Mayor Stephanie Killam. “The addition of residential care beds in our community is an important step in ensuring a full range of services are available to our senior residents.”

These services are the result of strong partnerships between the municipality, local organizations and Northern Health.  Local community organizations have been proactive in providing such services as transportation assistance and socialization opportunities for seniors.

Funding for the estimated $80,000 cost of the residential care bed renovations will come from Northern Health’s capital allocation from the Provincial government.
The College of New Caledonia - Mackenzie Campus is currently delivering the Resident Care/Home Support Program to 11 students in Mackenzie. The program prepares students to help care for clients in all dimensions of health, whether in their home or in a facility. Employment opportunities for the graduates will include facilities such as the residential care unit at Mackenzie and District Hospital and Health Centre, as well as with community agencies, group homes, school systems, and clients in their own homes.

Only another 4996 to go and they will have fulfilled their promise of 8 years ago!
4 beds...wow...that many!
The Province has created 11,314 new or replacement beds for residential care and assisted living since 2001.

Wait times to access residential care have decreased from one year in 2001 to 30-90 days today.

A very good record - better than anything that happened (or did not happen!) during the last lost decade of the NDP.
The Province has also closed numerous beds, enough to make any new ones just replacements instead of the increase we were promised. Overall there has been a minor increase but nowhere near the 5,000 new beds we were promised. The Provincial government has been playing a snow job game, counting every bed introduced but not counting those that have been closed. Very dishonest, but not unexpected given their record for deception.

I repeat, we were promised 5,000 new beds IN ADDITION to those already there. That has not been done after eight years.
A huge number of rooms (beds) were found to be completely unfit for human habitation when the Liberals too over.

Therefore, these had to be shut down and replaced with modern healthy accommodation. Many had no proper wheel chair access, especially to bathrooms. There was mold and unsafe wiring, etc.

If one counts all the beds that desperately needed to be replaced, plus the large number of totally new ones that were added the 5,000 new beds promise was kept. To not accept that reality and to say that only 4 beds were added and 4,996 were not - is a very deceptive statement as well.

Glen Clark promised 30,000 new forestry jobs and not only did that not happen but there were huge net losses of forestry jobs during his term!

As one can see, not every promise will be and can be kept when circumstances change and conditions change.

Of course, if it happens to the NDP it is one of those unmentionable things brought on by uncontrollable outside events, of course. And the faithful will make excuses.

Cheers! Have an excellent day!
