Poles Think Differently In Death Of Dziekanski

By Ben Meisner

The Braidwood Inquiry has a couple of anxious watchers every day. The Polish Government being the main group which has requested the evidence dealing with the death of a Polish citizen, Robert Dziekanski, at the hands of RCMP in Vancouver Airport.

Under a 15 year old treaty, Canada is obliged to send along the evidence and the reason given so far is that it is required at this time in order to deal with the many inquiries and a Coroner’s inquest on the horizon.

The Poles have been using the words "murder charges" for the four men, which doesn’t ring very well when you look at our international reputation given that no charges were laid in Canada in connection with the incident. The Canadian authorities said that Dziekanski’s death was the result of an unintended death following the justified use of a tazer.

The Poles have been looking at the amateur video recordings and they see something quite different. One Pole suggested recently that the whole incident reminded him of the time when the Soviets ruled the country of Poland, "You could expect something like that, but in Canada, the land of the free?"

What makes the whole affair even worse are the comments by the Chief Commissioner of the RCMP asking us all to watch the entire evidence before making a judgment call. Canadians have being doing exactly that and what they have been exposed to is anything but trust in the federal force.

Poland on the other hand could lay the charges and then wait for the Canadian government to refuse to turn over the four officers, that’s likely to occur, the only problem is that the four had better pick their spots of travel very carefully, hoping that they don’t land in a jurisdiction that does not think the same way as Canada has so far in the matter.

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

Now that the RCMP have lowered their standards for deployment of tasers you can expect more unintended deaths!
Dont Tase me bro!
All those four police reminded me of was a bully group of four who ganged up on one man with little reason. The four wimps did not have the know how or the guts to talk to the man. Why would they? They could not wait to take out their big gun so they used the stapler as the reason. OMG Four grown men trained to subdo a person could not. Why? Because they did not want to. I feel so sorry for the family of this poor man but I also feel like this needed to happen. The RCMP need a total overhaul and a reality check. They also need to not investigate themselves because they have this motto in their "Member" group and that is to back each other up at all costs. What pee's me off the most is one of those officers was the one who hit that young man on the moter bike and then left the scene to take his children home. Rediculous liars!
yes the RCMP acted in haste but then they are trained to be gung-ho and macho man will react differently when with other macho men. But I do think that the security at the airport or the airline that Mr. Dziekanski flew on should be standing front and center with the RCMP. If they had done their jobs it would not have come to this.
I believe the main piece of information we can get out of this dog and pony show is the poor training being given to the RCMP. I wonder if these four guys have grounds for a lawsuit against the RCMP for poor training having a lot with being put into this position.
But having said that, is the out and out lying while under oath. We know Robinson's character for lying with his hit and run. Did these four guys cook up their own story or have they been coached by the force. To me it seems they have been coached. Where are the commissioned officers in all this farce? They seem to be a rare bunch, I suspect leaving these four to take the heat while protecting their political asses.

Now Harper has taken away half the funding from the police complaints commissioner giving the cops more of a free hand to go after the little guy as they can't seem to get the big fish.
If four bystanders witness a traffic accident and they are asked to testify a few days later as to the finer details it is certain that the four testimonies will most likely be quite different.

Here they are all the same and it appears that this happened by some miraculous coincidence, especially since they testified under oath that they never discussed the event, ever.

Well, I just find that to be plainly unbelievable.

Sorry.

"they testified under oath that they never discussed the event"

They may not have. But all of them probably saw the video, read the newspapers, may even have read some blogs. Their opinions, as with virtually every person, will taint what they actually saw. Their opinions were formed in part by what they read.

To me, it is not that unusual at all in cases such as this.

Take four witnesses to an accident; interview them on the spot at the accident; let them go for 2 weeks to read media reports, words from other people, watch videos, etc.; then interview them once more. Betcha they will interview differently and they will much more converge on a single viewpoint than their original words.

Talking to the other 3 eyewitnesses is not required to see that effect.
yes, your notion would put them in the same category as Omar al-Bashir, which is just the proper category for them in my opinion - brutal uncaring killers
not sure if you watch these comments closely or not - but it might be a good idea to get a copy of today's (26th) The Province and save the editorial cartoon - I just saw an on-line tv clip, apparently it pillories our William Elliott
Worse yet is the RCMP removed from their policy last month in the area of tazer use. The idea that multiple shocks should be avoided and that a person should be given fair warning before deployment of a tazer have now been removed from RCMP policy as a result of the Braidwood Inquiry.

What this does in effect is it gives the officers legal protection against unlawful tazer use, because now they can say they were acting within policy... this is the RCMP result of the Braidwood inquiry... try to find a way to avoid these inquires in the future by defunding the inquiries and making it lawful to do what they are accused of doing this time around by changing internal policy so they will be within RCMP policy in the future... and to hell with the courts, politicians, and the Charter of Rights.

This is a slap in the face for democracy and the rights of Canadians and shows an outrageous disdain for accountability for them to change the policy to make it so they are not breaking the rules in the future... rather than address the problem at hand.

IMO the RCMP need to be broken up and disbanded. They have gone to far and are showing complete contempt for the public. They are becoming an organ for a police state and we better wake up to this as a society before its to late... the Poles recognize this because they have experienced it in the past.
Here is a bit of an aside....I dont think it is a good idea to cheer the Poles charging our citizens with any crime alledgedly committed in Canada. Is this sort of thing reciprocated? Does it extend to other nations (where, say criticizing the Chinese govt is a crime)? Can Islamic nations charge our citizens for offending its citizens religion while they are in canada?
I realize people want justice here, but I get the feeling that Ben is willing to accept a little back door justice here. Adhere to our system or change it. Don't try to go around it on a case by case basis.
When the premier of BC Mr Gordon Campbell
goes to Hawaii in 2003 and gets arrested for drunk driving, see his mugshot here:
http://dawn.thot.net/campbell_dui.html

what should one expect from his ministers or from the RCMP in BC? He sets a bad example for breaking the law and the BC residents reward him and his party with another term in office. Well Done folks instead of re-electing him, we should have fired him for drunk driving.

One should make a report about the extent of expansion of discrimination, racism and gangesterism under Gordi's watch in BC. The province's enforcment of law and order is broken because the guy sitting on top does not beleive in it, or at least his actions do not demonstrate that. You can call it tickling down law-breaking attitude.

Mismanagment in RCMP and UNBC are just
two examples pointing to the bigger problem in this province which is CYA, "[breaking the law and] covering your ass". It is too late to be surprised and thanks Bog there is a Polish government to expose this to the world.
What most people who only speak English forget is that they will rarely find themselves in teh same situation while travelling internationally as Robert Dziekanski did. The whole thing seems to have started due to language difficulties. Had he been able to communicate, he would have been with his mother.

How many Canadians whose mother tongue is English elarn enough of the language of the country that they travel to, to make themselves understood in such situations. Mexico, Japan, China, Poland, etc. English is a relatively common language in much of the world, especially at international ports of entries that we have few worries of not finding someone who understands us.

That is the real root of the problem. I am sure that is one of the reasons why Poland might be upset. And we are too blind to see that is the problem, so it is not likely to get fixed soon.

Has the protocol for greeting foreigners at YVR changed since this incident? Are passengers on foreign flights, before they arrive in Vancouver, asked whether they speak English or whether they will need help from someone speaking their language?

Others are asked if they need assistance to get to a connecting gate. It is not as if this is not within the realm of possibility.
