Prince George, B.C.- A rezoning application to allow the development of a liquor store on the property occupied by the Hart Wheel Inn on Highway 97 North, has been approved.

The approval means there will now be liquor store in the space that used to be occupied by a convenience store.

The approval will see the transfer of the Westwood Pub’s existing liquor retail license from 1315 Noranda Road East (Pumphouse Pub) to the new site at 6055 Monterey Road.

The distance between the new location and existing liquor stores is:
  • approximately 1.30 km to the north (Alpine Cold Beer and Liquor Store), services residences within the Birchwood and Rundstrom area, and
  • 3.8 km to the south (Northwood Motor Inn Beer Store) services the Houghtaling and Aberdeen areas.

The proposed new liquor retail store will predominantly service the Wilson and Randle areas, as
well as the Feyer and Old Summit Lake Road areas the license currently serves.

There is a Cold Beer & Liquor Store in the Birchwood Shopping Centre adjacent to Turbo and Hart Shopping Centre top of hill from Hart Wheel Inn. Probably no more that a kilometer from the new one. Did the City forget to consider this one?
Just a thought.
I suppose this is the Alpine Cold Beer and Liquor store. So I now have confirmation that it was in fact considered.
My mistake..."Alpine" threw me off, ie Alpine Pub in Hart Highlands.
I think grocery stores and convenience stores should be allowed to sell liquor as they can in Quebec and most of the States within the USA and much of Europe. Liquor laws in Canada are archaic. This distance business is bizzare.
I think we should control how many places can sell apples. 1.5 km separation between apple selling stores.
I can't believe we are getting yet ANOTHER -relocated or not. This is sad.
Oh wonderful. Now there will be five (or six, I am not sure about the pumphouse pub liquor store) liquor stores on the Hart between Nelly's and the one across from Kelly Road School. Just what we needed.
metalman.
This one will be very convenient!
Just whip in off the highway and pick up a 6 pack for the drive north!
How handy is that!
Why not build a rehab. facility on the land instead?
I remember a few years back one establishment wanted to sell their liquor license alone without the building for $800,000... for a license issued by the city to do business.

I'm with Gus on this one... let the corner stores sell liquor IMO. The city shouldn't be in the business of picking winers and losers... it should be the market the sorts it out.
Regulation of just where and when people can buy booze has worked sooooo well in controlling alcohol abuse in this country so far hasn't it.
Alcohol is a legal product for adults. we ought to face up to this fact and stop trying to eliminate it through the back doors of government legislation.
Social engineering through government regulations is contrary to the ideals of a free society (you know that thing we brag about and try to export all over the world). It is not, as yet a crime to destroy oneself with booze, let alone drink a six pack watching a game. If i want to brink a few on the weekend i shouldnt have to trek across town and pay a whole lot of extra government penalties to do so.
There starting to get like Starbucks is(was) in Van, one on every corner...
Seems to me I remember the concept behind neighbourhood pubs was to put them within walking distances to residential areas?
As in... walk to the pub, crawl home?
Admittedly that was a long time ago, but if that was the case, why do they have to have X number of parking spots?
The bulk of people drive to the pub it seems, judging by how full the parking lots are!
What have these establishments achieved as opposed to the bigger "beer parlours/lounges" in the downtown/commercial areas?
Always interesting how the almighty dollar will overrule logic everytime!
Pg was once noted as having the most bar stools per capita in BC.
Things have changed dramatically.
I have not been in the bars and cabarets in many years. Last month I went to take my daughter out for her 19th.
Sgt O's was closed for renos, shooters looked desolate, rum jungle closed, my favorite the generator had a flippin' country band, what used to be called the Iron horse is now a peeler bar and the Cadillac was the only one hopping but with more country.

I guess we are supposed to stay at home at drink in private. It will keep drunk driving down?!
Loki, it doesn't keep drunk driving down, it increases it. When people have friends over for an evening, the friends drive home via the back roads. My downtown business is shrinking rapidly. We have the downtown bar crowd taken care of in about 30 minutes after closing time. It use to take us 2 hours.

I agree with Gus, sell the stuff in the conveniance stores.
