Cameron Street Bridge Concrete Questioned

Prince George, B.C. – The Cameron Street Bridge won’t likely be ready for use until at least the end of July.
That was the final line in the report presented to Council this evening from the Operations Manager, Bill Gaal.

But it was Councillor Brian Skakun who wanted more information on the state of the concrete poured as caps and “wing walls for the new bridge. It is his understanding there are cracks and some portions may have to be redone.

General Manager of Development Services, Bob Radloff says there were some issues with the concrete, but the problems have been addressed and corrected.  He also said the bridge piers will be thoroughly inspected for safety before there will be any final approval  for the bridge to be used.

There is an issue with cost over runs on the  construction, and although asked  if it was known just  how much those over runs were,  Radloff didn't give an amount,  saying instead the contract  provides processes to deal with  increases in costs and they are  following those processes.  Radloff also said the  delays in construction were in part the result of "Third party influences".

Gaal’s report outlines the remaining work as follows:

  • The new steel girders are now in position over Pier #1 (south shore) through Pier #5 (north shore).
  • The 28m Heritage Span has been moved  to the City’s 4th Avenue works yard until a new home can be finalized
  • Construction will now proceed into the securing of the girders to Pier #3, and preparation for the placement of the precast concrete deck panels.
  • Once the deck panels are in place, installation of rebar will begin in preparation for the concrete deck pour.
  • It is expected the rebar work will be completed in May with the concrete deck poured by the end of June 2009.
  • The concrete jump spans (north & south) will also be formed and poured following the deck work.
  • The north concrete wing walls are being constructed prior to the onset of the spring freshet.
  • The construction of the watermain is also scheduled to commence prior to the spring freshet (estimated to start by mid April).

Then the focus will be on building the roundabout at the north end.

The roundabout still needs to be brought to sub-grade elevation, catch basins &
electrical fixtures require installation, then the crush base will be placed, concrete curb & gutter and sidewalks will be installed and preparation for, and paving can then take place.

What a joke! I am not laughing though because as a tax payer I am paying for this.
If the city is going to contract ou these type of projects thet need to have people to check the references and enforce construction schedules. This bridge job has been a joke from the start. Somebody should be looking for a new job!
Do we the taxpayers have to pay for 3rd party influences and what were those influences. Think that the city should start to abide by the contracts as writen.
Only in PG!
I guess I am the only one who has not seen the contract yet. Can someone send me a copy so that I can comment too? Thanks.
metalman.
What are the third party influences?

"Somebody sould be looking for a new job" says muckermite" That would be Kinsley, and the rest of the Council that voted for this disaster. Kinsley's gone and we get to pick up the pieces.
I'm waiting to see how 53' chip wagons are going to negotiate a roundabout day in and day out.
"He also said the bridge piers will be thoroughly inspected for safety before there will be any final approval for the bridge to be used."

Perfect, Lets build the bridge then see if it can actually be used.
OMFG.

Radloff you are trying to be funny right?

Can you believe this guy?

What kind of manager of taxpayers dollars would say something like that, never mind even thinking it?

Bob Radloff, YOU'RE FIRED.

Didn't the recent expensive study of the integrity of the piers conclude that they are sound and have another 75 year life expectancy?

Is my memory better than that of the head honcho?

Didn't that independent study cost 175 grand or more? What gives? Only in P.G. is right!

Diplomat. The Old piers are supposed to be OK for the next 75 years. It is the concrete caps and wings that were built on top of the old piers, that apparently have some problems.

The building of this bridge has been a joke from the get go, and I see it as a culmination of Kinsleys years as our Mayor, much like the shoe throwing at President Bush, there are certain things you will be remembered for.

If I was a superstitous person I would say that the old Bridge has put a curse on the new one. In any event I dont expect this bridge will be ready in July, and in fact would not be suprised to see it shut down within a few years, if in fact that concrete hasnt been done right.
The story doesn't say old piers, but thanks for the additional info! The story says that issues with the new concrete have been addressed and corrected. Then it goes on to state that the "bridge piers will be thoroughly inspected for safety" from which I gathered that well...the bridge piers will be thoroughly inspected for safety.

The bridge is too heavy to throw...so somebody doesn't have to duck.
Is it just me or does it seem that everything PG is involved with is flawed somehow? Why is that? Okay I am off to my happy place again. lol
