P.G. to Host Summit on Community Cancer Control

Prince George, B.C.- four hundred and 50 health care delegates from from across Canada will be coming to Prince george in June for the 7th annual National Summit on Community Cancer Control .
The summit, set for June 11 to 13, is held every four years. It provides physicians, nurses, administrators and career professionals an opportunity to collaborate on workable solutions to community cancer control issues.
Hosted by Northern Health, under the auspices of the Canadian Association of Provincial Cancer Agencies (CAPCA), and supported by the BC Cancer Agency, an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority, and the BC Cancer Foundation, the 2009 Summit theme is 'Innovative Solutions for Rural and Remote Cancer Control Issues: Today and Tomorrow'.
"British Columbia is a recognized leader in cancer prevention and treatment," said British Columbia's Health Services Minister George Abbott. "With the development of our Northern Cancer Control Strategy and construction of the new BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North, it is appropriate for Northern Health to host this national summit."
"The summit will provide a great opportunity for oncology professionals from across the country to share proven strategies that will further develop cancer control in rural and remote regions," said Cathy Ulrich, Chief Executive Officer for Northern Health. "We look forward to sharing our own unique experiences in the implementation of cancer care services in northern B.C."
The program for the three-day Summit features BC Cancer Agency Professional Development Day on Thursday, June 11 offering 20 speakers during six concurrent specialty discipline sessions. On June 12 and 13, Northern Health presents 70 plus dynamic experts across six concurrent sessions, and various networking and social functions. In addition, delegates will be able to visit national and provincial exhibitors, view the poster display and use the Internet lounge.
Four world-renowned keynote speakers will be part of the highlights of the Summit:

* Dr. Tony Fields, Vice President, Medical Affairs & Community
Oncology, Alberta Cancer Board
* Dr. Simon Sutcliffe, Past President, BC Cancer Agency
"The BC Cancer Agency was an early supporter of the national Summit when it was first launched," said Brian Schmidt, BC Cancer Agency interim president.
"It is critical that oncology professionals from across Canada continue to have this opportunity to exchange information on what they have learned from designing and testing innovative processes and systems for improved community cancer control."
