Prince George, B.C.- The alcohol policy at CN Centre will be up for discussion on Monday night.
The new boss at the CN Centre will be asking Prince George City Council if it can change the policy to allow for beer sales in the general seating areas.
Currently, some concerts only allow for beer sales in designated areas while during hockey games, beer buyers can’t take the suds back to their seat.
The request before Council on Monday asks if there is a desire to bring forth a plan for a one year trial project that would allow beer sales in general seating.

Bout time we came out of the dark ages. I think we are only one of the few hockey venues that won't let beer in the stands. The opponents of this plan must think that beer drinkers in P.G. are all a bunch of uneducated backwood rednecks.. I think not. Lets give it a try. The beautiful people in Kelowna and Vancouver can do it,so why can't we. Too many imported do-gooders in this town trying to force their selfcentered lifestyles on the MAJORITY of good honest hard working hometown northerners,
I find it hard to believe that people can't go to a game or function, which might last a couple of hours, without having to consume alcohol.
I enjoy a brew as much as the next person but I don't find it all that hard to go a couple of hours without drinking.
I guess we will see how many on council agree with me....probably not that many.
It's a money maker, Racer
I'm sure alot of people can go without consuming alcohol for a couple of hours. Living in a country that is as free as Canada its hard to believe that we don't have that choice.
hey if it brings more people out to the games then go for it...anything to bring some excited to the cougars im for...
I hope it doesn't bring more fans to the Multiplex for Cougars games! Who in the world wants to be sitting amongst 2000 more people who are there ONLY for the beer.

That said, I think it's absolutely ridiculous that I can't sit in my seat and have a beer while watching hockey in PG.
I suppose acrider....
"Living in a country that is as free as Canada its hard to believe that we don't have that choice."

I agree cpompletely. I still do not understand why one can't drink a beer walking down a street or sitting on the lawn in the park enjoying the sun for exactly that same reason. One can in more civilized parts of the world.
I agree gus, its not the beer thats the problem, its the drunk.
Alcohol affects the driving ability of people, therefore I would not be supportive of drinking and then driving from a public venue. If any one gets hurt it is too big a price to pay for a beer.
You mean public, like a pub or bar? People need to seperate legal from illegal activities. While one can't easily drive home drunk from a public event with no booze served, that doesnt mean we ban booze from every public event to stop drunk driving. It isnt right to take away law abiding folks right to a beer or two because they MIGHT do something illegal after. Come down hard on the offenders and stop trying to treat the rest of us like little children.
I would ban alcoholic beverages from professional soccer events that British and Irish attend. They have been known ro cause riots and burn the place down.
My tax dollars don't go into a pub or a bar, they do go into the CN Centre, therefore, I have a responsibility to state my opinion.
There are too many activities that are associated with alcohol. Speaking about being treated"like little children" what are we teaching our children when they are surrounded by alcohol consumption? Check out Municipal Alcohol Policy (MAP). I think Prince George could use some guidance around regulating drinking at city facilities.
"what are we teaching our children when they are surrounded by alcohol consumption"

That depends on your point of view.

Remember when we had ladies entrances beer parlours and mens entrances. That did a lot of good.

So did not being allowed to sit at a window in a restaurant lest someone on the outside would see someone drinking.

And before that, having restaurants not being able to serve alcohol and then taking months to get a license ro make sure the restaurant was being operted well.

And then beer parlour not being able to serve food.

And no alcohol sales except through gov operated stores .....

Did you realize that those countries with the lowest aclohol consumption per capita are also the countries mostly associated with terrorism. See what prohibition does to you?
I suspect that the only way for most people to watch the Cougers performance lately would be through a beer glass.

If people cannot attend a function without drinking to bloody bad. Maybe we should have one day a week when all the boozers can attend the CN Centre, fill up the seats, and drink to their hearts content.

I think that teachers should be allowed to drink in schools, doctors in hospitals, airline pilots, and anyone else who wants to have a beer. If we are going to be free, then lets go all the way. Why stop at hockey games.
Sigh, the same old extreme argument. There is a lot of difference between drinking a few beers at a hockey game and drinking at work. I should have thought everyone would know that. Freedom may not be absolute, but it is an important factor in quality of life. One mans right to have a beer may be the other guys right to vote in local elections.
In response to Rainbows question, Gus is right on. It depends on your view of alcohol. There are a lot of functional families that drink beer as an aid to recreation. There are, of course families who can't do anything responsibly. Do we punish the former to babysit the latter? I for one am getting tired of having my activities restricted in order to coddle or protect folks who cant seem to take care of themselves.
Oh and by the way, i drink less than a case of beer a year, but i would have liked a beer or two to console me at games this year....

My previous comment was not in any way suggesting that people's rights and activities be suppressed. That responsible folks are punished because of the irresponsible behaviour of others. I enjoy my freedom to choose just like everyone else.
I do however question a culture that promotes recreation and activities centered around alcohol. I was brought up around responsible alcohol consumption during childhood so I am not coming from the extreme perspective here.
In fact, if one were to refer to the Municipal Alcohol Policy (MAP) this offers GUIDELINES not hard rules around where in the facility alcohol can be served, how many staff during a shift, number of tickets sold, warning signs, etc.
Some prevention strategies may save us from additional problems down the road. And I think we can all agree that we don't need any more headaches than what we already have.
Enjoy the sunshine!
Have a section or two where folks can drink beer in the stands, just like every other rink in the WHL. For the record, I don't drink but I have been to rinks where it is allowed and I didn't find it to be that big of a deal. The city will make more money off of it, which only helps to offset the costs of the facility. Put the drinking only section away from the benches and penalty boxes (just to help eliminate the "urge" for some goofy antics), kick people out as soon as they act up (if they act up) and get on with it.

It's about as bad as downtown. Either do something about it or stop talking.
Beer has been consumed in the stands at many other venues in many other areas. It's nothing new and it's not a big deal.
Seen a group of joyfull red nosed folks sittin on steps at the corner of 7th and Dominion gurglin a couple jugs with out a care in the world the other day. Whats the diff...a quiet socialable beer at a hockey game or a refreshing gurgle on a street corner out front your home? Whats all the fuss about?
Maybe beer goggles would make it easier to watch the Cougars on the ice????
Okay, here is the latest new rule: all adults must consume alcohol when going to a Cougars game, that way more people will feel good about watching their home team lose.
metalman.
If the rednecks in this town could handle beer it would be okay at the hockey game but most of them can't and then we have to put up with their ignorance and beligerence. Can't we just go to a game and sit for two hours without consuming alcohol - give me a break. AND yes, if it passes it is only because of the almighty dollar.
I agree with greta.
