Dawson Creek, BC—A coalition of community leaders has been formed in an effort to help the Enbridge Northern Gateway Project become a reality.
Called the Northern Gateway Alliance , the organization hopes to generate support for the project.
“This is an exciting project for both northern BC and Alberta,” said Colin Kinsley former Mayor of Prince George, and Chair of the Northern Gateway Alliance. “It’s important that northerners have a voice in the project. This project represents untold new opportunities for both aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities while adhering to the highest standards and best environmental practices.”
To date the group has already signed over 100 members with a goal of 500 members over the next several months. Among the community leaders already featured on the Alliance's new website are; Kitimat Mayor Joanne Monaghan, Mackenzie Mayor Stephanie Killam, Initiaitives Prince George CEO Tim McEwan and VP Economic Development Katherine Scouten.
The project is a multi billion dollar plan that would see a twin pipeline built from Alberta to a marine terminal in Kitmat. One line would be used to transport petroleum to the terminal for export, while the other would be used to import condensate to Alberta. The line has received some resistance from some coastal Frist Nations who are concerned about the marine terminal and the potential for oil spills on the west coast.
Agreements have been reached with 30 of the 50 bands impacted along the pipeline route.
The Northern Gateway Alliance is reaching out to northern residents, businesses, unions and community groups to talk about the benefits of the project. The goal is to build its support base and ultimately make this project a reality.
The group has launched a website ( www.northerngatewayalliance.ca) where people can add their names to the list of members.
