Prince George, B.C.- The clock will soon be ticking for the owner of 255 Quebec Street.

Prince George City Council has approved four recommendations which:

a) declare the building to be a nuisance that Council considers “so dilapidated and unclean as to be offensive to the community, and that remedial action is required.”
b) call for the owner of the building to have the building demolished, the debris removed and any foundation hole filled
c) sets the time limit for this work to be done at 60 days starting May 13th
d) gives the owner two weeks, (starting May 13th) to request Council reconsider the action.

The building was the scene of a fire  about two years ago. (at right, firefighters prepare to tackle flames visible inside the tattoo shop in May of 2007,   photo opinion250 archive)
Since then, the building has been either blocked off by fencing, or (more recently) boarded up.

The request to have the building demolished carries more than a dozen letters from concerned citizens who say they believe the building to be unsafe and hazardous.

It takes citizens of PG to complain instead of proactive action by our City administration...just like our Bylaws Dept with regards to unsightly premises, abandoned cars on city boulevards etc etc.
Maybe we should charge the City a fee for this.
I agree, my parents neighbour has had the ugliest, despicable yard for 30 years now. Right near dptodd, go check it out. They have complained for years, and the city hasn't done a thing. So much for bylaws. Conformity??...any advice....
Bylaw Services (so called) is complaint driven. The more complaints, the sooner they will act.

For burned out buildings they have to get at leat 163 complaints. Any less than that and they will not act.
Town Council at work...if we were a city it would have been cleaned up a long time ago...The little town that just couldn't grow up to be a city.
It's been sitting there burned out and things flapping in the wind for so long that I thought perhaps it had been declared a heritage building already!

I also saw some tourists taking pictures of it...

Longnecks nailed it; this is a town with big city aspirations. At least it did not snow here overnight ;)
metalman.
On the topic of decrepid buildings...what about the north side of first ave? Driving past the jail and over the bridge the city looks quite good. And then first ave...yuck. Some of these buildings look unsafe.
Good news. I know the owner of this building & if it's left up to him this dump will stand for eternity like it is.
Hey Longnecks1 and diplomat you both gave me a good laugh for the day. LoL so true
I agree that the Bylaw office is good for nothing.
I owned various property here in PG, unfortunatly my nieghbors has unsightly Properties.
My writen complaints about these properties went on for over 2 years with the city having no athority to enforce any fine or clean up procedure.
I eventually sold my property and I will never invest my money in this city until the city management changes the way they do business.
That is the problem with this city,
NO ONE WILL INVEST MONEY HERE WITH INDIVIDUAL PROPERTIES AS DUMPING GROUNDS!!!!!
