Chalk One Up for Downtown Task Force

Prince George, B.C. – The Mayor’s Task Force on Downtown is on the road to seeing one of it’s initial objectives achieved and that is dealing with derelict buildings. “It’s one of the reasons why we greased the wheels to get some quick action on this, and I’d like to see us deal with a few others” says Mayor Dan Rogers.
It was Councilor Cameron Stolz who brought the matter before the Task Force and pressed the matter in City Council Chambers. His work, both on Council and as a member of the Task Force means the owner of the building at 255 Quebec Street will have two weeks from today to ask Council to reconsider its decision that calls for remedial action on the building that was  burned nearly two years ago.
That remedial action calls for the demolition of the building, removal of the debris and the filling of any excavation left behind.
If the owner fails to act on the matter within 60 days, the City will do the work and will bill the owner, as was the case in the demolition and removal of debris from the Columbus Hotel.
In this case, there is no tax issue, the municipal taxes are up to date on 255 Quebec Street.
The Mayor had asked the Downtown Task Force members for items that could be dealt with now and would not interfere with either the Smart Growth on the Ground project or the revising of the Official Community Plan. “I’ve encouraged all the members of the task force, if they identified things we know we can do now, move it to Council, make some decisions, and I think tangibly we saw the results of that Monday night.”
As for the owner of the property, the Mayor says clearly he is going to hear about this “Hopefully its going to prompt action that’s appropriate, but I suspect we’re going to hear from him. Clearly we want this issue dealt with.”

Clearly Dan Rogers, we want our damn roads fixed!!! Clearly Dan!
Praise to Dan Rogers in getting the ball rolling on some important issues. The roads are a funding issue that (I am sure) he is trying to deal with.
Nice work!!!
I would like to see this type of policy implemented within residential properties also.

Good Work on the new Councilers and the New Mayor.
Keep up the good work !!!
I will be watching this one with great interest. It has excellent "soap opera" potential.
This is awesome!! Happy to see the city doing something pro-active for once! PG needs some serious cosmetic work and this is certainly a start. I agree w/ Clean, a lot residential properties need to be ordered to clean up - is there not a bylaw of some kind stating that people need to mow their lawn, not have old broken down driers and furniture on their front lawn. There is a house on my road (just off of N. Nechako) that looks like it should be condemned, it's a disaster! I hope the city will be a bit more vigulante on keeping the meridans weed free as well, that is just ugly and run down looking. The roads need help, but that is a problem of all northern cities - it is certainly NOT unique to PG.
