Prince George, B.C.-   Together with the RCMP and Speed watch Volunteers, ICBC is putting out the word it is targeting speeders this weekend, and the RCMP will be looking for aggressive drivers.
“There are three main contributors to injuries and fatal crashes” says RCMP Constable Mike Hansen, "Speed, alcohol and failure to wear seatbelts.” (click on photo for video of radar in action,  as Constable Mike Hansen demonstrates  how  radar works)
According to ICBC stats, the Victoria Day long weekend typically has 80 speed related crashes throughout the province, and 5 of them will happen in the North Central region. What is more telling is that there will be at least two fatalities in B.C. and one of them will be in the North Central region.
Throughout the Province, there will be Speed Watch volunteers operating radar  with the linked sign boards which post a driver’s speed. There will also be plenty of   Police on the highways looking for speeders and aggressive drivers.

Hey cops I will give you a little hint, try the Domano raceway. Its cheaper than going to PGARA.
You're right! That is one of the worst. I bet the whole detachment could be kept busy on that stretch for quite some time!
"Consider Yourself Warned"

Oh yeah, well consider your own self warned that I'm not going to exceed the speed limit or drive aggressively !

How do you like that, Mike ?

I'm going to travel at a safe speed even if everybody else wants to do every inch of the speed limit !

How does that grab you ?

Furthermore, I'm even going to reduce my speed in areas where police are doing enforcement and pulling vehicles out of traffic !!

Ha, ha, you don't look so happy now do you ??

As long as it's going to be a crazy weekend anyway, I'm even going to watch for opportunities to let other vehicles conveniently merge in and out of traffic so as not to affect the flow of traffic and cause numerous "sudden stop" situations behind me !!!

Ha, ha ha ha...somebody stop the craziness !!!!

Get out your speed gun and ticket book Mike, and standby......

..... because the Race....Is....OFF !!

Seriously, Cst. Hansen is a really decent guy and a good cop. Why would you want to make a guy like that have to write you a coupon ?

Think about it, and have a safe weekend.
Raise the speed limit on the highways. It's not 1973.

BTW - the main contributor to accidents is bad drivers.
A real *goldmine* would be the construction sites with their reduced speeds and warnings of doubled fines!

The new way scale 4-laning close to Red Rock is a good example - I was almost run off the road by a large truck coming from behind and every car passed me on that stretch going way over the posted speed limit.

Twinning of the Fraser bridge and the stretch of road by the BCR: same thing! Posted limit: 50. Workers along the road. No difference to some: Pedal to the metal.

One wonders what the parents are teaching the kids which are seen in some cars?

It's o.k. to defy the law as long as one doesn't get caught.

Eatbush, what do you think bad drivers are? I think the ones who are drunk, not wearing a seatbelt and speeding are definitely classified under "bad driver".

Speed limits are arbitrary & the current ones were established in '73 to save fuel not to prevent accidents. They're kept low to generate revenue for the govt.
Actually speed limits are optional and it is not illegal until you are caught.
;)

Another class of bad driver is the one impeding the flow of traffic. If you have a line of cars behind you and nothing in front, you are a hazard to those not afraid of the pedal.

And please, if you choose to strictly adhere to the posted limit against the majority (voting issue you know) of other vehicles, at least keep to the right and allow the law breakers to occupy the enforcement officers.
Loki, couldn't agree more.
And all this time I thought that speed limit signs were just guidelines, suggestions or just recommendations. Who new?
I drive the speed limit - although I try to maintain the flow of traffic, I do not break the law to do it. I always drive in the 'slow lane' to allow those who choose to speed to do so at their desire. However, nearly every morning I get some jerk who feels the need to tailgate me to my turn off. It is absolutely irritating.
Aren't there other crimes being committed on long weekends too? Why aren't the thieves, druggies and other miscreants being warned and cracked down upon. Oh yes, there's no ticket money for catching them.
Traffic does their thing..General duty looks after the thieves, druggies, miscreants.
So that means we need less "traffic", and more "general duty".
more money in traffic than in general duty
Yeah, that's been said already. Doesn't make it right though.
Actually we need more traffic cops. I see so many bad/ dangerous drivers out there and there is never a blue and white around. Everyone hates to get a ticket, everyone thinks they are above speed limits (expert drivers one and all) but face it folks, speed kills.
I'd like to see the left hand turn signals on the bypass, out in front of the super store just to name a few get checked for timing with the straight through lights. It seems when the straight through lights change to green the left hand turners just keep steamin through. I'd think there would be a real cash cow for the traffic cops. I had a chance to mention this to a woman police officer one day and she just replied that there was nothing they could do about this problem. I guess I can't add nothin to that...?
I'm not at all a fan of traffic enforcement, I think with limited numbers of available staff, they should be busy with other things.

However, people who drive don't really give them the opportunity to back off.

I have seen so many really disturbing accidents, some of them preventable by as little as 10 km/h in speed reduction from what they were travelling.

The high speed crashes are always the most spectacular.
You really haven't lived until you've helped the firefighters extricate somebody's head from a crumpled up roof while the body is already laying on the stretcher.
That really makes your day, week, month, rest of your life...
